WD vs. Seagate?

Go to solution Solved by Flight1sim,

I thought Seagates bad rep was only with Enterprise drives? Is it really worth the price difference?

Tbh nah.

My seagate is just fine compared to my noisy WD blue (not as great as blacks, but still)

But I do have to tell you that my previous WD drives have lasted more than my Seagates.

Also what @Semper said, the seagate is only 3gb/s but that shouldnt matter too much if you're just using it as storage.

I was wondering which were more reliable for consumer use. Not a server rig or anything, I just want a 2TB drive for games and movies and junk. I have an SSD boot drive.  I have a WD Blue 1TB but it just isn't enough.

Also, why is this Seagate so much cheaper than this WD Black?

Thanks guys!

I could be very wrong

Western Digital has a better reputation, and from what I know, better speed and reliability for the blacks

The blues are a lot like the seagates

Blacks are usually more expensive than Blue.

The seagate is a 3gb/s interface, while the Wd is a 6gb/s interface, that explains the price difference.

Both are solid choices, and i've had success, and failure stories with both.

WD Blue is the entry level but I've seen a WD Blue 2.5" die and it wasn't pretty...

Ahh. But with 7200, is that really even a bottleneck? Will I notice a difference?

So far as I know, the interface is more of a marketing ploy. I don't think SATA III is capable of saturating 3gb/s, don't quote me on that, though. You should be fine with either. Like I said, I have success and failure stories with both, as well as with Toshiba, OCZ, Hitachi, and HGST. Just remember -  it's a matter of "when" not "if" when it comes to failure.

both are good just check out whichever you wallet wants to date.

I still have 4 80gb seagate ide that's still alive now and working on a htpc rig (extra) in the living room with a pentium 4.

well tbh I've had more western digital die on me but still good and I still buy wd drives. although comparing it to maxtor which I have 7 die on me and never lasted more than a year.

Live your life like a dream.

Yeah, but why so much more than tha Seagate of the same size and speed?

WD Blacks are performance drives. Barracudas are only slightly slower than Blacks, faster than Blues, and are better compared to Blues which are the consumer drives.

I thought Seagates bad rep was only with Enterprise drives?

Where'd you get that idea?

The seagate is a 3gb/s interface, while the Wd is a 6gb/s interface, that explains the price difference.

Both are solid choices, and i've had success, and failure stories with both.

The drive is incorrectly labelled in pcpartpicker. They're both 6Gb/s but it's not like that makes a difference for hdd's.
