I was wondering if it is possible to run a rig with triple SLI on a 1150 intel i7 4770K ? I know that my motherboard cant run handle it but I was wondering if there is a motherboard that can. I have a third GTX 780 that I would like to use but I need to know what kind of motherboard that I would need if its possible.

My rig:

Intel i7 4770k

2x EVGA 780 superclocked

16 gb Corsair vengence

ASUS Maximus VI Formula

EVGA supernova 1000w

Nope, the maximus VI formula does not have a PLX bridge so you are limited to 16 lanes and since SLI demands a minimum of 8x it's not possible

Edit:

http://pcpartpicker.com/part/asus-motherboard-z87ws This is a board that has a PLX bridge needed for 4-way SLI.

Linus's video on Quad SLI results for 980s can help you here, he explains the PCI-E lanes and the graphics card for everything.

A Z87 cpu can run 2 GPUs in 16x and 16x, or 3 GPUs in 16x, 8x, 8x However nvidia cards don't exactly play to well with 8x. you could Tri-XFire though.

lol its like what a 1-2 FPS difference from 16 to 8 x?

From already not-too-good SLI Scaling it's still quite a bit.

And I thought it was worse, sorry. It's 2:30am after an all nighter of maths assignment.

going through a PLX chip also adds latency... do you have a real reason to go triple SLI or is it just cause you have a 3rd card sitting around?  going through a PLX chip might degrade your gaming experience even if you get better average and min fps...

Is there any problems with the MSI Z87 xpower motherboard for triple sli?

nope that will work just fine too. i think the gigabyte z87 soc force has 4 way sli support as well

This is a priey mobo, might not be now but used to be but the gigabyte sniper 5 I am 99% sure it goes up to quad, someone correct me if I am wrong. But triple sli is a lot of hassle even if you get it to work, unless you have surround 1440p and even then triple sli seems kinda to much hassle I would personally try to stay away, but check out sniper 5 it should nonetheless

Well I play in NVIDIA surround I have 3 27inch monitors and I have a thrird card laying around thats why I wanted to see if there is a 1150 motherboard that can run triple sli. I plan on building a custom loop to cool them if I can run all three.

How much more latency would the PLX chip bring would I really notice a difference in game performance?

Should I just save my money for a while and do an X99 upgrade instead?

Do you get enough frames with the two or no?
