So i recently lost a hard drive that was not backed up which was motivation for me to put my other 3 and the replacement 4th drive into a raid 5. i have a 3tb drive 2x 2tb drives and 1 tb drive all diffrent brands and all 7200rpm sata 3. i know that you SHOULD have all the same drive size and a proper raid card instead of just using the raid controller on your mobo but i dont really have the money to replace perfectly good hard drives with others and go out and buy a raid card. the raid itself works fine but i am only getting 2.7tb. i thought it would use a 3tb, 2tb and a 1tb for the data then a 2tb for the equation = 6tb usable. i thought this way because raid 5 is ment to take 1 quarter of the available space and use it for the backup equation making 8tb into 6tb with a 2tb equation. any help or suggestion to how im wrong

When doing hardware based raid, on your mobo, it also makes the array using the size of the smallest drive - as they all need to match. So you essentially have and array of 4 x 1TB in RAID5 - which means you lose "one" to parity leaving a theoritical max of 3TB usable. Overhead, MBR, and such and voila - 2.7TB usable. You will need to upgrade your drives to get more space.

Something that "would" combing and use all the drives and give you more space woudl be Windows 8 / Server 2012 Storage Spaces...
