I built a computer this summer that me and some friends used to emulate gamecube/wii games. After the summer was over, i put it right beside my desk and just let it sit there. The other day, a friend came over so we tried to play on it, but for no reason, it crashed on startup. I tried several things with no success before i just decided to format and reinstall windows. Now it's working, but it's brutally slow, freezes on startup, and emulation is completely out of the question. Why would it do all that? I literally didn't even touch it at all for nearly 3 months and now it's a piece of crap. Specs are:

Core i3 3220 @3.33GHz

1x8GB kingston hyperx black @1600MHz

500GB WD blue

400w psu

Msi b75ma- e33 motherboard

Check your ram slots, incorrect or jiggled pins can cause a huge issue

Another thought could be your CPU is burned out, if you didn't cool it good enough it could've burned through its lifespan running hot emulation cycles

Id also check your HDD for any odd noises or vibrations, that could be a simple fix, HDD's slow down significantly before dying

Last resort would be any expansion or your mobo, id pull it out and check for any shorts or marks where it could've busted a capacitor or chipped a chip for any random reason (case being bumped, its happened)

Thats all I can think of atm

Best guess would be HDD or your mobo/cpu getting cooked

I was just using stock cooling...

your hdd seem to be on hibernate all this time, there are tons of HDDs that failed after months of sleeping or hibernating, it happened to me on laptop and 2 other sistems that havent used for more than 3motnhs.. im not sure why is this happening but all you can do is try with another HDD intall windows or in a SSD, but im 100% sure is yout HDD.

The blood on to your heart start pumping faster when you notice me.

But is ok.

Hey evilmeister13,

This could happen to computers when they are moved of if they have sit without any powering up.
First I would suggest what @Stupidtiggers said: check all your hardware, take it out, put it back in one by one, make sure it is firmly seated in place. Make sure all fans are spinning up and working properly and the whole case gets adequate airflow. Do a start-up test to check your CPU, GPU and RAM. Change the memory slot and see if that makes a difference.

During the movement, you might have damaged your HDD. I would suggest downloading WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic and running both the quick and the extended tests to check its S.M.A.R.T. status as well as for any bad sectors that might have occurred. You could also run chkdsk /r from the CMD to see if there are any bad clusters and if you could retrieve any data from them.

Stress test all your hardware to see which one might fail the test. Also check your task manager and see if there are any processes that are putting too much pressure on any of the hardware (CPU, GPU, HDD, RAM, etc.)

Clean any dust from the MOBO, the other parts and clean the air filters of your case - this might be causing high temperatures.

Keep us updated on how this is going. :)

It may be my HDD, I'll run all those tests when i get the chance. It's not the temperature, i just passed my hand near all the areas that are hot in more powerful computers (cpu, ram, hdd, north and southbridge) and its actually kinda cold. It has adequate cooling so i doubt thats the issue at all.

Well it sounds like a HDD issue then, I would suggest you nabbing an SSD or booting off an OS on a flash drive to see if it still is bogged down really bad

At least you could narrow it down to a hardware or possible software (windows) issue

Another great program for checking your hard drive is Defraggler, it'll let you see the SMART stats and benchmark it.

If you choose to use Defraggler, could you post a screenshot of the "Health" tab?

And also, what's the amount of free space on the drive, slim chance it's full, but might as well ask.

DataLifeguard is great. I also really like SeaTools from Seagate. They even have a bootable DOS version that I've thrown onto a CD and I use it at work.
