You have to know which protocol and frequency bands your carrier uses.

These are the ones the Nexus 6 supports (with Nano-SIM obviously being sim card type)

You can call your carrier and ask what they use or simply ask if the Nexus 6 will work on their network.

Or you can check what phones the carrier offers to users and see what protocols/bands those phones support and see if there's a large or complete overlap with the Nexus 6.

I want to import a nexus 6 for christmas, will it work in countries outside of the US with a non US carrier sim card? 

What country do you use? And what carrier? 

 

The Nexus 6 is quad-band GSM so it will most likely work regardless, but whether or not you will get 3G or LTE is a different story and we can only know if we know what carrier you use.
