Random Video Driver Crashes

Go to solution Solved by Joppsta,

Appear to have resolved it by wiping drivers in safe mode with display driver uninstaller then installing the old driver, restarting.

Here's the trace:

PtvFpKs.png

Went into test mode and fired a few salvos of 20mm in my Kubelwind.. very odd. I couldn't even look at the tanks in the garage area without a crash so I thought I would "stress test" to make sure that I wasn't just lucky.

See you on the battlefield!

EDIT: Still wondering if I should get a new PSU though, since isn't 650 cutting the edge of my system's power needs? I know there are calculators but I'd like reassurance is all ^^

Let me start by saying I have the latest drivers from Nvidia, using Nvidia Geforce experience. So I got the Civ Beyond Earth driver that came out recently that I noticed seems to be causing SLI issues etc. I don't think my issues are with regards to that though.

These driver crashes I'm experiencing are pretty inconsistent. I record gameplay with commentary on and off so that is also a possible contributing factor but I've not noticed any correlation with it.

My system specs are:

  • PSU: Corsair AX650 (650W)
  • Mobo: Asus P8Z68-V Pro/Gen3
  • CPU: i7-2600K @ Stock
  • GPU: Gigabyte GTX 980 G1 @ Stock
  • Storage: Samsung 840 250GB, 840 EVO 500GB, Seagate 1TB Barracude, Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB
  • RAM: 16GB Corsair Vengeance @ Stock
  • Cooling: 6 fans, case and heatsink
  • Single Disk Drive, no idea the name. Just a DVD-RW.

I know it cannot possibly be a thermal issue, the maximum my graphics card reached during the last crash was 50C.

I am thinking it's either potentially a PSU issue as, is 650W enough to run this system with no overclocking or that it's purely driver based, although that seems rather unlikely too given the nature of the frequency of crashes. I've had a lot of hangups on FIFA 15 requiring me to completely restart my system, there is still picture just I cannot make any input to the machine. These crashes are unique to FIFA though and I think it's more EA's terrific quality control to blame here than my machine. The last crash was in War Thunder, I had just called in artillery and fired a shot at a SU, close range (less than 50m) from my Panther D. Now War Thunder appears to be crashing every time I start it up. Very odd.

Thoughts?

I would go back to old drivers, I  heard that the new drivers have a lot of issues

Try increasing the core voltage on your GPU.

Maybe you're thinking about AMD drivers. Yes the latest AMD drivers are crap, at least more than usual. There are absolutely no issues with the new nvidia drivers except for some people who cant find the DSR option for games. This is not an issue with the drivers, the drivers work perfectly fine.

Well, it's at stock speeds so why would I need to run more volts through it?

And I can vouch for the guy saying the new drivers have issues, lots of people complaining about SLI issues on Nvidia's facebook page

Well you can try downgrading and hope that helps...

Increasing voltage is to rule out any stability issues. If you increase the voltage and the stuff stops crashing you know the card wasnt stable at stock and it needs more power.

You could also try downclocking the core and mem clocks, but that would obviously give worse performance so thats why I said to increase the voltage.

I think it may be a driver related issue, I'll share the trace of MSI AB.

As you can see, there is a sudden surge in GPU usage with no power spike to correspond. Going to try reverting the drivers and see if that helps, I also underclocked the card by -50MHz on memory and core to test and see if that helped, same result.
