What are my options?

I plan on buying more storage for it ( atleast 3tb drive) and upgrading to a 970 around this holiday season. 

Now my question is, am I better off getting a new motherboard ( one of the good 990fx chipsets) for more sata ports and better OC'ing capabilities( still on stock right now.)

OR getting a sata PCI card and using the money saved to upgrade other aspects? 

 

 

((also, as a 'in the back of my mind question', how much of a improvement would I see if I made the switch to an 4770k + z97. All I do is game and run a plex server.))

Save money and just get the 970.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure AM3+ is better than 990FX, I'll call in the trusty @WoodenMarker to confirm or deny.

 

As for the upgrades, looks like your motherboard has 5 SATA ports so you should have enough for another drive (3TB you mentioned).

 

It would not be worth spending money on a new motherboard IMO even if the 990FX is better, it would make more sense to save up for a better processor/motherboard or save for the 970.

get a i5 instead... it'll performance better in some games over anything from AMD.

all current sata ports are filled. the last hard drive in it isn't produced anymore and had to custom add it. Also the 970 is basically gonna be gifted. So I'll have some extra bones leftover .

Look at gaming and plex benchmarks?

I'd suggest just consolidating your storage to +3TB drives and giving/selling/re-purposing your smaller drives as needed.
