I want to build a computer for gaming and things like editing with After Efects and I would like to know what specs would be good my budget is about $3000 give or take a bit. I'll be using it more for gaming so if it cannot be great for both I would prefer for it to better for gaming.

I would suggest a z87 or a 990fx build and a nvidia gpu because of cuda. Maybe a 780 or a 770. AMD FX 8350 would be good for multitasking such as after effects which utilises a lot of threads and then the nvidia gpu for things such as cuda based pieces of software in after effects.

with a 3000$ budget, isn't X79 a better choice for workstations? xD

mkay. does your 3000$ include peripherals such as screen, keyboard, mouse, speakers, headset or you already have this kind of stuff?

(and btw at 3000$ it will be great for anything)

$3000 not including peripherals since I have most of them.

I don't know really because X79 is pretty damned expensive. I think it would be best to go with Z87 because he is not a professional and X79 is not that good for gaming because most of the x79 chips are just binned 8 core xeons with 2 cores disabled.

Then let's suggest two different builds :P

Would you like to upgrade to an IPS monitor (if you don't have one already)? That way you'll get incredible color accuracy if you're going to do some editing.

Nah you're right, he can save money by going with the z87 platform and push it more towards other components. Makes more sense.

+1 point for you. :P

Thank you Sir I would recommend the X79 platform if he was a professional and was doing more workstation stuff than gaming.

Ok. Here's my take on your 3000$ build:

-i7 4770k
-MSI Z87 MPower Max
-Patriot Viper 3 16GB 1866MHz

-Corsair 600T White
-Western Digital 2TB Black FAEX
-Two Samsung 840 Pro 256GB in RAID 0
-EVGA GTX Titan Superclocked

-Corsair AX860i
-Corsair H100i

all of that adds up to roughly 2900$ on NewEgg in the USA
