In all benchmarks i saw, overclocked cards beat stock by one , sometimes two miserable fps!

So why bother? Let alone strain your hardware? What do i miss?

What benchmarks where you watching? Usually you'll get a 5-20FPS boost. Key word is usually.

I don't know what benchmarks you are looking at but you are looking at the wrong ones, Typically most cards can gain about 15-25% fps from overclocks. And that even before you start adding voltages to get higher overclocks.

i oced my cpu and i saw like a 20 fps improvement in BF3 lmao. but then, it is a quad q8300 paired with a GTX 670.

First of all, if you're a gamer and you've got a high end GPU, then you really don't need to overclock. Those people do it because they can.

On the other side 3d animators and editors need to squeeze every little peace of power out of the cards so the live rendering works faster and the whole process of rendering a video or a movie happens faster. Even those 2 fps you mentioned matter for them.

I once had one of these, now I've got this.

It depends on what is limiting performance more. If its a CPU-limited scenario, overclocking the GPU core won't make a difference, and vice-versa. In some games (or situations in games) the difference can be bigger. Furthermore, the most important gains are often at the minimum framerates, rather than the averages.

That said, you're right, overclocking usually isn't worth it from a practical standpoint. The process of overclocking is often enjoyable to some people on its own, though.

it depends on the game... some games have solid gains with OC'ing (keep an eye on min fps too, not just average) while others non or next to none...  gpu overclocking needs to be done on a per game basis anyway cause different games load up the gpu in different ways... at least to get the most out of your OC.  you can go with a one size fits all OC but then you'd be leaving MHz on the table for some games

point is, if the game you're playing see's an improvement, go ahead and OC, if not, leave it stock

It depends on the game. With my old 7950 the overclocks gave me anywhere from 5 to 15fps increase. Biggest boost I saw was in BF4.

If it means the difference between going from under 60fps to over 60fps, it's certainly worth it. ;)
