Can my XFX 550W Core run a GTX970 2x 8-pin?

SpiralSweep

Hi

I have a XFX 550W Core Edition with:

1x 6-pin PCIe (570mm)
1x 6+2-pin PCIe (600mm)

And I intend to buy a Zotac 970 AMP Extreme. TDP 176W and requires 2x 8-pin.

Could my XFX Core, without the 2 missing pins, through some kind of adapters really work? Or I really need a PSU upgrade?

You SHOULD (Better safe than sorry) get a better PSU I am afraid, my graphics card (R9 280) requires a 600W PSU minimum. Don't want to melt anything xD

Yes, the Core 550 is just perfect to run a 970. A 6 pin plug will just go straight into an 8 pin socket leaving two pins on the socket empty, but this isn't an issue. Not sure why Zotac put two 8-pins on a 970 tho... A single 8 pin is more then enough

Just buy a 6pin to 8pin adaptor.

Just buy a 6pin to 8pin adaptor.

In fact they do provide 2x Dual 6-pin-to-8-pin PCIe adapters.

I think my XFX 550W Core can handle my low spec i3 system + GTX970 176W TDP,  but I want to be certain that I will not run into any kind of low power drop PSU issues with these kind of adapters...

You should be fine. The XFX is a good power supply (Seasonic made) and 550W is enough for any single gpu.
