Hey guys I wanted to know if you think the STRIX 970 is a good choice for my first PC build for mostly gaming and some video rendering

I probably will overclock sometime in the future with the normal Direct CU II cooler and wanted to know, Do you guys think that I won't be able to get as high of an overclock like with some other 970's because they have more power connectors, the STRIX 970 only has 1 8-pin so do you think it will be an issue?

Mobo will be Asus Z97-Pro (Wifi I need dat wifi and don't want a pcie card) CPU will be 4790k and power supply a bit overkill I think but I want expandability, Is the AX860i

Please share any thoughts below, Thanks!

(This is my 300th post! Yay?)

How much more quiet is it?

For me a lot. The ax860i was audible at any speed, crappy fan it was. Fan profile was quite garbage too, in the passive mode the fan basically moves a few milimeters every 10sec with a click noise. If you're at the cutout between passive & fan mode, the fan basically ramps up to max rpm to quickly cool down the PSU and turns off like 5 times in a minute time. The HX850i doesnt have any of these issues, Corsair improved their fan profile and uses now a better fan for the HX850i which is a Fluid bearing instead of a ball bearing fan. FDB's are much quieter than DBB's at lower speed.

Besides from a price perspective the AX860i isn't worth it at all. Something like the EVGA 850 G2 is much better for the price but the fan isn't that quiet as the HX850i though. Going with a single GPU you won't manage to let the 850G2/hx850i's fan kick in. You don't even need a 850W PSU at all, a 600W PSU is plenty for 2 cards even.

I think I'll go with the RM850. Do you think it's good? The HX isn't at my local store, also I'll be overclocking my CPU and GPU and possibly in the future my ram so how do you think the RM850 will fair?

I'll probably go with the HX850i

Well I just checked the prices, didn't notice you were from Australia. 300$ is quite a lot for a PSU, don't you think? The EVGA 750 G2 is 150$. HX750i fan is quieter but if you're not over-sensitive to noise you won't hear the 750 G2's fan at all.

http://au.pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-power-supply-220g20750xr - 30$ for the 850W version.

Yeah it is a lot, but this is my first build and I want to choose each and every part carefully, and also most of the parts are from corsair and have corsair link compatibility so that's why I wanted a corsair power supply.

Right now I don't know if to get the RM850 Or the top dog AX860i, Price isn't a problem, and I was going to get the HX850i but realised again my store doesn't have it.

I am a quiet freak and I have really good hearing, So I want a silent PSU that will be reliable and be suitable for over-clocking stuff.

The AX860i is 100 bucks more expensive than the RM850, Price doesn't matter, I want a silent and reliable PSU.

The RM is silent and the AX is reliable, so which one do you think is the best bet?

Thanks! :D

There's nothing wrong with RM PSU's so go for it if you like. You could go with the AX860 (non-I) but doesn't have Corsair Link. Also Corsair Link isn't useful other than knowing how much power your PC pulls.

To answer your original question: My Strix 970 runs with +200 MHz and that's it. That's the same OC as Linus' sample did. So maybe that's all it can do, but i don't know. Looks like Gigabyte G1 can get a little bit more. If you don't care about silence, get the G1. I would btw OC right off the bat, since theOC isn't that big anyways.

who cares...
