Hello im organising a lan for me and my friends and i wanted to know if i want to connect 8 pc's to the internet do i need a 9 port switch (1 port fot the internet and 8 for the pc's) or do i need an 8 port switch

You will need a router and depending on how many ports, a switch to connect the router and the remaining pc's.

You'll need a 9-port switch.

 

But those do not exist, if you want more than 8 ports, you'll have to get a 16-port switch or get an 8-port and a 5-port switch and link them together.

So 9 ports 1 to the router and the others to the pc's

some 8 port switcheswill have the LAN port in the back leaving all 8 ports free, some will not though

 

I would recommend grabbing a 10 port switch just in case

A router with 4 ports (most consumer router) and a 8 port switch will do you job plus some.

The problem is my modem is 30 meters away so i need a switch with enough ports

Switches are pretty cheap, you can get a 16 port in AUS for under $80. So if you are worried.... overkill it

I would recommend getting a setup like this:

 

 

It will be the cheapest as 16-port switches can be costly compared to 5 and 8-port switches.
