What linux os should i install

It has a Pentium T3400 @ 2.16GHz

232GB HDD

2GB of RAM

What linux OS should I install that is lightweight

Either http://lubuntu.net or http://xubuntu.org. If you want a little adventurous, minimal install Archlinux with Tiling DE.

I suggest Ubuntu as its the most stable. I have a similar laptop running as a FTP server, Home NAS server and I run VNC in the background to allow me to remote in from anywhere and anything.

While kali is nice. I think its got alot extra stuff in there for network testing that the OP most likely doesnt need.

true, i wouldnt exactly call it the most "user friendly" OS out there.

I would suggest you to try out Manjaro. It is a really good distro and introduces you in a user friendly way to Arch. If you have become more familiar with it you could try to install Arch. But you could also stick with Manjaro, as it is a really good distro (already said that). You should always keep trying out different distros, I would not do that on your main pc though, an old pc will do.
