My friend has an S3 that was given to him. He knew that it wouldn't charge but he took it anyways ( I mean who wouldn't, its a free phone). I'm guessing its just the port but could it be something else?

If you connect the phone to a computer does it sync or have any response?

If it doesn't it it's most likely a damaged micro USB port so you will need to replace the lower PCB on the phone, I had this happen with a friend who dropped their phone on the plugged in USB cable.
