But with Broadwell coming out next year and the LGA 1150 sockets will not be compatible.

No but with dx 12 coming and cpu requirements about to drop the 4970k might be all the cpu power we will need for a long long time.

Some games. Most modern games use 4.

If you have a game that uses 1 core, then it is so old that a 3.5GHz CPU will kill its ass.

Arma, assassins creed 4, all the total war games. There are still plenty of games that use 1 core.

It's all about the GPU.

Lol no.

I'll leave this here.

Is that supposed to mean something? That has a lot of missing information. And far cry 3 is a game that uses 4 cores. Congrats.

I know. That was the point.

I had someone say "Games that can use 4 cores are just as good when running on 2"

Ok, so i3 or Pentium.

Games don't use hyper threading. unless you are crysis 3...

OP it's really depends on what are you gonna do, i would recommend the G3258 if you're gonna upgrade to a i5 in the future. The G3258 is great for a starter chip for gaming(It depends on what kind of gaming though) but not that great if you're gonna use it for gaming in the long run. If your looking to just stick with your plan and don't upgrade then the X4 860K, although the 760K has a higher clock speed, the 860K has a lower TDP. It means that it will draw less power.

Because there aren't threads to take advantage of HT. It doesn't require any special support, game will just see it as a real core.

Honestly I didn't even think about that, but seeing the i3 is about twice as much and you are not actually getting more power, in fact less because a higher clock speed will do more I still think the i3 is pointless when the pentium is the same thing without HT

Don't listen to AMD fan boys, single thread performance is more important for gaming then the amount of cores.

I3's were like up to 50% faster than a G3258. http://pclab.pl/art57691.html

For 30$ more he can get a 6300, a G3258 isn't something you recommend straight away like you can do with a 4670k. I'm not saying he should get it, he didn't mention what games he plays, but if its something like Watch Dogs/Crysis 3 the g3258 can be horrible compared to a 6300/i3.

The 860k would be the best budget CPU for multi-threaded applications and gaming. If you can clock it to 4.8 GHz it's really a little monster.

Don't let people fool you, sure AMD core performance is miles behind Intel. But they still offer some really good value microprocessors.

To give you an idea my A10-6800k (stock 4.1 GHz) pushes my HD 5870 to full load easily in modern games like BF3 with extra CPU power to spare.

A 860k overclocked will handle most single card configurations with ease.
