I am new to overclocking have been doing some research. I kinda hit a wall i am mostly doing the research because I am looking for an upgrade I am a gamer really only playing games maybe a some video editing but nothing to crazy. my main question is whether if i should go with a ivy bridge i5 or a haswell i5. im not to big into overclocking mostly because it just flies right over my head, i wonder if i should even purchase a K. if i dont get a K whats the next best thing i have the money to do a 4th gen system upgrade. since doing research on overclocking, its really has become over whelming to plan for it since im not that educated on the topic. i would love to get a grip on overclocking and really learn about why and how its better. thank you for you time

If you want to OC, get the K series. Also, I would go with IVB because of lower heat output. There are also overclocking guides for IVB and there's lots of people on here willing to help you(including me). I'd also like to add that with a cheaper Haswell board, you're likely to get the same OC as compared to a more expensive Haswell board, because of the VRM being integrated into the chip.

*IVB is Ivy Bridge.

not an overclocker but linus uploaded a video today i think he mentioned the haswell being better. also there was a good motherboard for overclocking check it out it went up today. also from my knowledge the K version is the best, easyist intel chip for over clocking.

I would go with Haswell just because they do show to be better overclockers the Ivy Bridge was. On the other hand not many people have made overclocks on Haswell yet, so it might be hard to find comprehensiv guides and results.

Id say honestly, that you should base your choice on whether or not you need the features of the Z87 chipset, opposed to the Z77.

And my 2 cents are that i dont think haswell will be as good an overclocker because of its heat issues.

If your budget can go far enough to buy a Haswell, go ahead. They overclock well and are faster overall than IB. However, if going Haswell means buying a cheaper motherboard or graphics card, I wouldn't do it. For gaming, the chips you want to be looking at are the 3570K and the 4670K. I would definitely buy a K series processor. Even if you don't overclock now, you might want to down the road.
