Time Warner Approves Comcast Merger

Spideybro

I've seen a lot of your posts here (long time lurker) and you always seem to take a relatively conservative side without realizing that most conservatives aren't supporting net neutrality at the moment.

Just sayin'.

That's the definition of crony capitalism.

Yes, because clearly the only reason Google isn't expanding is because of cash. They're practically broke over there!

The government doesn't need to fund shit. Just stop these two from merging, put your foot down on net neutrality, and the market will resolve everything.

I'm not a "whole hog" conservative, for instance, I don't agree with gay marriage but I don't think it should be illegal (government shouldn't officiate marriages, it's a private social contract between 2 parties of legal age). And I think pot should be legal (recreationally). While the argument could be made that doing away with net neutrality would promote competition, we all know it will not. It will restrict the flow of information, and no company will be able to compete with all of the larger corporations already in existence, because the smaller companies service would at some point have to travel on or via the larger corporations network.

Most "conservatives" are thinking about net neutrality too much like a business, and not like a public service. The internet, or at least access to it, should be more like a road than anything else. And we don't pay to drive faster on the road (although you do pay more when you get caught speeding? lol).

Also, that's more the definition of capitalism when people don't pay attention to what their politicians are doing, regardless of party. We have no one to blame but ourselves for the current political climate of "market". No one really pays attention like they should, or understands the actions of the government like they should. It's our responsibility to keep "crony capitalism" from happening, by refusing to vote for people that participate in it. I for one think we need to do away with the idea of incumbents and re-elections all together. Make it so politics can't be a career.

Edit: I have been told I am more of a libertarian than anything else. I just want people to do what's right, and for states to govern themselves for the most part

See I'm reading all these beliefs here and a lot of them are verging on socialist. Believing that internet is a right, for example, or if not that believing that the government should finance access to it for everyone with a computer.

That's why I get confused because you talk about reduced spending i.e. fiscal conservatism a lot but then you talk about your opinions on net neutrality and it's almost as if it's coming from a different person. I could be wrong here but you seem kind of personally conflicted between two sides of a debate with weight on both sides and you like elements of both but don't know which to choose.

That's why I prefer the approach we have here in Sweden.

The municipality builds and maintains the fiber lanes. You as a house owner (or apartment building owner) pays a one time fee to connect your building to it. Any ISP can negotiate fair agreements with the municipality and use the fiber connections.

Right now I can pick between 9 different ISPs that offers Internet through fiber to me. T3, AllTele, Bahnhof, Bredband2, Universal Telecom, Tele2, Telia, Viasat or Tyfon. It creates a fair playing field for all companies so there is a ton of competitiveness, which is great for us customers.

I am not quite sure how it works on the mobile side, but there is one carrier that is partially owned by the government and it seems like other carriers are allowed to use their network. I have seen like 4-5 different carriers say they use Telia's network (and thus you get the same coverage) but I also know ~4 carriers that all have their own networks so I don't think the terms for using their network are that great.

But then again... Our government seems far more trustworthy than the US one so maybe it wouldn't work over there.

Welp, that settles it. I'm moving to Sweden.

Someone told Luke and Linus at CES 2017 to "Unban the legend known as Jerakl" and that's about all I've got going for me. (It didn't work)

Google has hundreds of billions, right? They definitely have the money. They just have to decide how much more ad revenue giving the entire country gigabit fiber would get them...

The best use of fiber is porn and they dont use google ads(I think)

And so GabeN has told us to march forthith unto the Land of Holy welding our swords of mice, shields of keyboards, and helmets of Oculus Rifts where we shall reclaim it-which is rightfully ours-from the PUNY Console Peasants from whom armed only with mere controllers we shall decimate in all forms of battle and we shall dominate even in their most ridiculous tradition and infatuation of CoD. Yes, my brothers- sisters and trans sexuals too- we shall destroy the inferior of races with our might and majesty. And if any Peasants wish to join us they must speak now or forever perish. -Ancient Speech from a Leader of Old, Book of Murratri section 2
