My mother currently uses a Cisco 2203C modem from the dawn of time and I am looking to upgrade it for her. It is a lease from TW so I believe it would be better to buy her a retail model from this century and end up saving money in the long run. The problem is that she requires landline service and internet and there are not many modems available that have built in EMTAs. On TimeWarner's page it lists a Arris TG862G as being capable of supporting phone as well as internet, but it has a built in router (boo) and is not available for general sale...meaning lease only. However, the TG822G is, and it appears to be the same thing on paper minus the wifi broadcaster (yay!). I have also read online in some areas that they require you to use their loaned EMTA compatible modems for phone service, and cannot purchase your own. My question is this: Would the TG822G be worth taking the risk and the hassle of spending hours on the phone trying to set up? Is there anything else I can do here to get this accomplished?

Thank you for your time.

The modem is not on the Time Warner approved hardware list so I wouldn't be too quick about purchasing it. The modem works fine for Optimum (it's the one they include during install) and Comcast but reading some TWC forums paints a bleaker picture. From what I gathered TWC can provision the modem but you'll only be able to use it for internet OR phone for some reason.

If I were you I would either look through eBay/Craigslist for a used TWC modem/phone combo or call TWC and ask about purchasing the unit outright.

That is what I am afraid of. I have never had a good experience with calling and always get connected to the low level people who insist they can't transfer my call without first going through their scripts.
