Hey guys, so I want to get a great audio experience from my pc and I was considering 2 options. The first is just buying computer speakers, the second being buying home theater speakers and finding a way to play them through my PC. Is there one which would be a better choice? And how would I go powering bigger speakers without buying an expensive box to do so? Thanks:)

allot of speakers now use there own psu which is part of them,

high end pc speakers can be excellent, what size room are they going to be in?

if not to large and you plan to be at the desk something like this will be perfectly adequate

a good pair of head phones are also a very good option as they allow for alot more control over the sound due to the distance between speaker and ear being small and completely uninterrupted, they also have the advantage of blocking out other noise

Computer speakers would probably be fine if you wanted a more open type of experience but if you wanted a good quality at a low price then headphones would be the way to go i think

Well the thing is that I do have a pair of audio technica headphones that I love but when friends come over and we want to watch a movie I don't like having to use the TV speakers. I would also like to play music at a relatively loud level while I'm working on other things.

The one thing I'd avoid with any kind of pc multi-media speaker set is anything with more than two speakers or anything with a sub.

Subwoofers included with this kits are never any good and always sound terrible. so, for dedicated multi-media speakers, 2 channel is the best. As far home theater stuff goes, it's great but that costs a lot.

I recently picked up some logitech Z200 speakers.. they are pretty good but my main aim was to go as cheap as possible. They look nice and work so I have few complaints but that is probably about the cheapest speaker out there that isn't completely bad..

+1

OP: in summary, if you want to go the 'speaker way'

- Multimedia surround speakers set (stereo, 2.1, 5.1, 7.1, etc) if you want something that's easy to setup, budget friendly, minimal hassles

- Passive bookshelf speakers set + AV receiver, if you wanna go full surround, or a pair of stereo speakers (+ amp if passive, no need for amp if active) for stereo sound. Price can go from $50 to over $5000, more hassles and setup time.
