I was looking for a new mechanical key board but I do not know what kind of switches I would like, and I do not have access to a place that has multiple keyboards that I can type on and compare. Are there any tricks to finding out what switches you prefer. Any thing helps.

Blue- Loud, satisfying click, heavier press

Brown-  Blue's quieter brother, no loud click, but you get a tactile bump to let you know that you've actuated the key.

Red- Quiet, no click, smooth press all the way down, and easy to press. No tactile actuating feedback.

Black- As far as I know, it's just a Red switch, except it's a bit harder to press down.

Most popular for gaming are the blues, reds, and browns. blues are the clicky, tactile switches. Red are quite linear, smooth switches. Browns have a tactile bump but no click.

Typists like blacks, clears.

This is a bit off topic, but since it could probably be answered here anyway, might as well ask instead of making a new thread.

What're the main differences between blue and brown? Just the sound of the click? I was considering getting brown for typing and gaming, but if that's the only real difference, might as well just get whichever's cheaper right?

The differences in Blue and Brown is that the Brown is a bump and no click at 45g / cn, where as blue is at 50cn and 55 at the bottom, but with a bump and click.  Also there is no switch best used for gaming - all switches are good for gaming it just is dependent on what -you- like to the touch.  I personally love Greens and Clears, because ugh... but anyway.  They should be equal in price across the board, so get whatever you think will sound / feel the best.  I like the clickyness, but the smoothness and pronounced bump of something like the clear's is loved greatly.
