So a couple of days ago I downloaded CrystalDiskInfo just to check up on my HDD and it said it had 9 reallocated sectors.
I was going to take a look at this a couple of days later, but before I could do that, my PC just froze an hour ago, and did not want to reboot properly. Was stuck on the BIOS for a minute at times, and the Windows 8 loading screen for several minutes (if it loaded up at all..). After a couple of reboots and resets, it works again! But very slowly. I've run Malwarebytes and nothing can be found. However, when I check up Crystal Disk Info, it now tells me I have 285 reallocated sectors. To my understanding this means my HDD is dying, which is of no surprise because I've used it extensively (2000+ boots, 14,5K hrs powered on) for the past 3.5 years. One thing that I just wnated to confirm though, was that earlier this year I've gotten an SSD and since then used the SSD to store my OS on. (And certain games, programs.) Why did Windows boot so slowly if my SSD had no issue? CrystalDiskInfo is also showing the drive is in ''good'' condition.

If my HDD is indeed faulty, I'm going to order a new one right away.

Thanks in advance!

I love StarCraft

Probably is a HDD fault; I would use it solely as a storage drive for non-critical files, since you have an SSD for your boot drive.

Is the HDD under warranty? If so, send it back.

Nope, its over 3 years old, no way I have the warranty on that still :P

My SSD is purely 120GB - I use it for my OS, Starcraft, Steam (program itself) and a couple of other programs. I've noticed some music stuttering too lately, might that have to do with the HDD too?

I don't know without looking at it.

The question really is whether it makes weird noises or not etc. Aging hard drives start to make more noise than new ones.

Compatible with Windows 95

Hey Thalandros,

It really sounds like your drive is failing due to bad sectors. I would try to run chkdsk /r to try to extend its life a bit so you can get your data backed up. You can also download WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic and run it to confirm that this is the issue ( http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=810〈=en ). I wouldn't count on that drive to store any data at all. If you are running some music, the program that plays the music or some background files and the HDD has trouble reading them, this might reflect on the other operations that you are doing with that PC.

I would suggest changing that drive as soon as you can.

Hope this helps,

Well I have no memory of it making less consistent sound, but under load it definitely is a bit noisy.

I'm running the WD data lifeguard diagnostic as we speak, but sadly CMD doesn't want to go further than

''The type of the file system is NTFS''. :(

As replacement I'm looking at WD drives, should I get a blue or green drive for storage + games? I like a less noisy HDD, but at the same time I don't want to lose any loading times? Thanks in advance! :)

Hey again :)

If you are looking for a compromise between noise and speed - WD Blue would be the right choice. WD Green is indeed very quiet and energy efficient, but it does work a bit slower than the WD Blue and it spins down when not use and needs several seconds to spin back up.
