It isn't technically my first build, but in a practical sense yes (my dad builds pc's so we have spare parts everywhere). It will be a major upgrade from an alienware with some crappy 660m in it. Main uses are gaming, video editing, and general purpose.

Looks fine :) think about a crucial or kingston SSD maybe.. although intel make geat ssd's .. GTX 970s are more than capable of everything but if you can afford it keep the 980 and everything else looks good!

Yeah, my dad might work somewhere and get discounts on certain products.

You can get better performance for cheaper, but as far as getting great parts in each section... You picked almost all of my favorite parts for each category. You can get more for cheaper though, technically you can fit dual 970s into a $1700 budget. But if you just felt like going with the sensible not overkill option in each category then A+.

Id'e go with dominator platinum's. Lowers CAS higher speeds.

Better for the editing side of things.

Just remember: Random people on the internet ALWAYS know more than professionals, when someone's lying, AND can predict the future.

Looks incredible!!  I would try one thing, though.  I did a bit of research on the 450D, and you can install up to 2 120mm fans in the bottom (if you remove the HDD trays...if you don't take it out looks like you can only install a single 120mm).  I think ideally, putting a fan in the bottom and buying a 980 that has more of an open air cooler (gigabyte windforce, evga acx, etc...) you could get better gpu temps.

the reason I say this is because you are going with a radiator to cool the 4790k, and that heat wont be put back into your case.

This is just rambling but it would be sick if you took out the HDD trays, got another SSD (if needed) and mounted them behind your mobo tray (which the 450D supports).  Then you could put another 120 mm fan in the bottom and have REALLY nice airflow.
