Windows OEM or Retail ?

Go to solution Solved by Mheld,

Yes, this only leaves us to your Vista OEM key. You could try installing 8 on your new PC (not 8.1, it won't work) and use the MS phone activation. Have your Vista and 7 keys ready for this.

Oke Thanks allot for the help :)

I wil try the ms phone activation and else just buy a copy after all

Hi guys

So i am planning on making a New pc and ofcourse you need a copy of windows as well.

my curent pc is "NOT"selfmade and around 6 years old it was bought from a store with windows instaled.

to save me some money is was looking if it has the OEM or retail lisence but i just cant figure it out.

the pc came with windows Vista home basic(32/bit) and is now running windows 8.1 pro(32/bit) i always updated windows with a disk .

the second section of the product id does not say OEM but its a 5 digit number

The sticker on the side of the case says "Windows Vista Home basic ECA" along with a key also not saying oem

also i red the lisence agreement and there it says that i can put windows on to another pc as long as it is owned by me

So far as i know a prebuild bought pc always comes with oem liscene but al the ways to check that say its retail so what is it ?

i hope some one can help me out  :)

From what I understand, with OEM Windows, you can not share the license. You can install it on one computer, and if you want to transfer the license to another computer, you have to remove it from the previous computer. Here is a quote from the Windows 8 OEM Personal Use License:

Can I transfer the software to another computer or user? You may transfer the software to another computer that belongs to you. You may also transfer the software (together with the license) to a computer owned by someone else if a.) you are the first licensed user of the software and b.) the new user agrees to the terms of this agreement. To make that transfer, you must transfer the original media, the certificate of authenticity, the product key and the proof of purchase directly to that other person, without retaining any copies of the software. You may use the backup copy we allow you to make or the media that the software came on to transfer the software. Anytime you transfer the software to a new computer, you must remove the software from the prior computer. You may not transfer the software to share licenses between computers. You may transfer Get Genuine Windows software, Pro Pack or Media Center Pack software only together with the licensed computer.

Hope this helps.

i updated from windows 7 to windows 8 by disk and later downloaded windows 8.1 when it came out

Well, was your 7 key an Upgrade or Full version? If it's upgrade then it should say so on the top left corner of the box.
