1. Budget & Location
My budget, or rather the build I have already wish listed through amazon is currently around $3200 US dollars. I live in Texas.

2. Aim
I want to play all games for like 3-5 years to come, maybe not necessarily at max settings but at least the games right now at max. I'm most anticipating games like rpg's and fps's... and right now I really want witcher 3 to be as beautiful as possible when I get it. Umm.... and I also want the boot up to be quick and painless c:

**Note

- I do a lot of music production, and plan on buying a decent studio setup soon; I guess this might affect you guise's recommended amount of ram? idk.

3. Monitors
I don't understand the appeal of more than one monitor... I just don't even know what are the pros or cons or anything, please explain to me a bit or give me a good example/reference as to why it would matter; a few scenarios.

4. Peripherals
Yeah I want a nice cool looking keyboard and mouse. Also while on cool; I do care how cool my build looks:)

I might wanna play some mmorpgs... no I will play some... so I might need one of those weird mouses with a ton of buttons?? maybe...

5. Why are you upgrading?
I am not upgrading; this is the first time I have ever attempted to build a rig at all; and I am super determined to follow through. I do have a case already: http://tinyurl.com/kte5k2x

And I also just splurged on kingpin gtx 780 ti as well since it dropped in price 2 days ago... http://tinyurl.com/qxuho2n

I know this is my first post but please acknowledge my sincerity and have patience with me, I really don't want to make a mistake here on my first time, I have some buddies from my work helping with the actual building if necessary, I just wanna buy the right stuff. If you want; here is my wish list: http://amzn.com/w/3037T9RZNW4NP   <===== I feel like my ram choice is not great :(

I can increase my budget by at least $500 if you would deem it necessary. As a last note I like sims 3 and wanna play some final fantasy mmo's in the future! :D

Oh noo... I may have already messed up. Jeez... Okay. I can return the kingpin. No biggie.

I don't know what x99 is, my laptop is asus; that thing looks really cool too...

Yeah I figured my ram was lame, I don't know what x99 is but what is compatible with that then?

Hmm... I had trouble zero-ing in on that monitor at all, I really couldn't make a choice when it came to them. Help me!

Why do you want that build? Why would I want 3 graphics cards linked up like that? is that better? I like his list, but it was just thrown at me so aggressively (cry) and I don't know what to make of it.

EDIT: Alright I will be returning my kingpin soon!

- I changed my rig a little now... I think it is good now; thanks to you guys :)

**I know the GTX 980 is sold out everywhere, generally speaking, when will that restock? In a few weeks?

Anyway; new rig: http://amzn.com/w/3037T9RZNW4NP

For a music workstation that'll last:

32 GB Ram

music production software (DAWs) and the other software which you'll be using e.g., virtual instruments (VSTi's) and effects (VSTs) use all available cores/threads.

Or: more cores=significant performance increase

With your budget, 8-core intel would be the best choice (x99).

SSDs galore.

Machine would literally "rock"!

Good music making too ya.

3 way sli is actually pretty good these days... Since the build had a 4k monitor it would be able to run those things rather well. :) since it's mainly just gaming I put more money into a GPU more so then the CPU because many games will only use 4 cores/8 threads for a long time.

I really don't think the 3 way gpu would be good for me on a first build. I don't know much about it, but I figure it would be less stable... and hotter? idk. I would rather get the gtx 980 for now, and I changed my rig a bit... Still trying to return the kingpin :S

http://amzn.com/w/3037T9RZNW4NP

I do not feel too good about my power supply. I think I am getting one that is too high of wattage/power. I'd like someone to just confirm that the powers supply is good or not as good!

One of my friends said that I shouldn't worry about water cooling since I won't run anything to make it that hot right now anyway. Do you guys agree? Also he said that the i5 out right now is newer than the i7 I am choosing and that I would be fine with a cheaper/newer i5.

EDIT: I guess I could use 32 gbs of ram so I could have an easier time when producing music. Can I just double the ram sticks I am getting now? That would work fine I think.

EDIT: if I get 2 gtx 980's, would that help with a future 4k display I'll probs get?

Keep the Kingpin if you have to. It is a very decent gpu and will give you years of use.

The psu is too large. A 650W psu is enough for the build - check out Seasonic and XFX. But check out the EVGA 220-G2-0750-XR 750W psu as it is often well priced.

Multiple monitors can be useful in various ways. One can, for instance extend a timeline across monitors showing a longer period or more detail.

What case?

You sure about keeping the kingpin? Nah I'll return it, I got the return sticker printed out already anyway.

I gotta think about my room space, I simply don't have desk or computer table big enough for multi monitors...

THATS ANOTHER THING. What kind of desk should I get, I have no clue...

I was just saying that there is nothing wrong with the Kingpin. If you can return it for a GTX 980 and save a little into the bargin, go for it.

Can you address the newer i5 proposal my friend made? if you don't mind me picking your brain!

Also... I really don't want any game right now to not let me max the settings unless it just has weak sauce coding like sims3 which I still love and will install anyway. For my monitor's resolution, I should be fine with a gtx 980 for now right?

If you were building a mostly gaming system an i5 would be a good choice. For media editing an i7 (or Xenon) would be a better choice. The build you have is good. Although you may find it a bit noisy.

The GTX 980 will have no trouble with a 2560x1440 monitor

What parts of my build will be nosiest? Is there any kind of other part or way I can reduce the noise? My laptop is lame and loud... I do wear headphones mostly but still; if I can make it quieter I want too!

There are cases designed for quiet operation. Fractal Design Define series. The R4 is particularly popular. Corsair has several models, Obsidan 550D and Carbide 330R. Nanoxia has several Deep Silence models.

Noise can be further reduced by going with a quiet air cpu cooler. Noctua has several popular models that do an excellent job cooling and are generally quieter than AIO like the H110. The NH-D14 or NH-U12S would be good choices given the memory modules being used.

I would get most of these items, except the 3 way SLI. I would get a 2 way 980 SLI instead, 512GB MX100 SSD and think about getting more RAM.

Good luck.

I think that is the best build since you will be doing 'a lot' of music production the extra ram and the extra cores will help out a lot.

An odd memory configuration. For less than $60 more one could get 4x8GB which would allow for quad channel memory operation.

I wish I had known this before hand. I do have a case already, I'll make due with that. I will use those noctua fans though, I have heard of them before and my case still has expansions for fans and stock fans in it.

Yeah, I already planned on sli'ing two gtx 980's, but not until I can afford a 4k display comfortably. I will upgrade to 32 gb's of ram soon after I finish the build.

**EDIT: WaIt... the water cooler I am getting won't be loud right? Do I even need it really...

Also guys, I noticed that a lot of the parts I am buying seem to drop price frequently... like i7 for example is cheaper today all of a sudden. Is there a reason why?
