Laptop problemerinos

Hey guys,

 

so i gave my old PC to my sister today because her Laptop kinda died.

Here is what she said she did:

Somehow SMASHED the enter key brutally which cause some kind of crack.

 

Now it won't boot anymore and says there is an disk read error.

 

It's an rather old HP with an Turion Dual Core processor. I used HPs build in Start up, Work in and hard drive test but each of them fails after about 10minutes.

 

 

She said she expect the built in blu ray drive to be disconnected or damaged and therefore the system will not boot. i have no idea if that's possible tho

 

 

Important: There are lots of unsaved pictures on the laptop which i want to save sooo just formating it is not an option ^^

 

 

On a side note, it gets pretty hot but i might just open it up and renew thermal paste and stuff.

 

 

 

Any suggestions?

Well your hard drive is kinda screwed then, and you need a new keyboard. You could try and image as much of the hard drive as possible, but if it fails after 10 min of use, you're not gonna get much.

 

Well the keyboard work perfectly. Would be f*cked up if the hard drive is dead but it doesnt fail when using the laptop but when performing the hard drive test (and any other test) Could it be failing because of overheating?

You  guys think i could take the HDD out, throw it in my PC and save the data? Maybe it's just the OS being dead (its Win Vista so...)

If it's connected by SATA then probably yes. No guarantee on how much you will be able to get back though...

I've had shitty luck with connecting laptop hard drives to ATX power supplies, but yeah I do think you should try it. If it doesn't spin up then throw it back into the laptop and see if you can get all the pictures off of it. It shouldn't die because of over heating, I've had my Acer's hard drive up to 53°C before I switched to an SSD in it, and temps aren't much better, and the hard drive was the origonal one so... I wouldn't rule it out, but it should be fine temp wise though. I wouldn't try and push your luck on it though, it doesn't sound like it has much life left in it after the key got slammed. I killed a hard drive in my HP that way after swearing at it didn't make it do what I wanted.

 

well i can't throw it back in the laptop and get the pictures because it won't boot to the OS to get the pictures or to get anything i can get into the bios though

 

Oh and what do you mean with shitty luck with ATX psus?

Standard Computer power supplies are under the "ATX" standard for voltage, size, connectors, minimum level of efficiency, there is mATX, which is similar to SFX I think, and there used to be AT, which is really old. I know I'm missing some standards, and my info could be off a bit, but this is just my understanding of it.

 

yeah i know that but why with Laptop HDDs? Do ATX psu's tend to "overpower" the HDD?
