Alight so I am making a complete overkill build to run my 3 4k monitors but, I need some help with the hardware portion.

I am trying to make the custom water loop look EXACTLY like the loop in this video.

[yt]
[/yt]

Here are the questions that I want to ask.

1. I know that in order to get best performance out of 4 way sli I will need to have the most lanes, so I choose a CPU with 40 lanes. Will this configuration allow me to have all 4 PCIe slots run at x8?

2. Is the power supply that I chose, powerful enough to run all the components (and a pump that I didn't add to the list yet) and have enough room for some big overclocking?

3. Is everything compatible?

What are you using it for? Also if you have no prior water cooling experience going water cooled on your first build is a terrible idea

 eGPU Setup: Macbook Pro 13" 16GB DDR3 RAM, 512GB SSD, i5 3210M, GTX 980 eGPU

New PC: i7-4790k, Corsair H100iGTX, ASrock Fatal1ty Z97 Killer, 24GB Ram, 850 EVO 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD, GTX 1080 Fractal Design R4, EVGA Supernova G2 650W

That build makes no sense IMO, you will NEVER need that much power, only if you have the 4k monitors :P

Try to get this, since it will have enough power to power Vegas: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-power-supply-220p21600x1

Here's what I thought:

1) 4 gpus aren't overkill, they are just pointless. You won't notice almost ANY performance gain, in fact you might loose performance. I suggest you ditch one 980 and use the spared money for a 5960x instead.

2) why did you put in a 5900 rpm hdd? Get rid of that, it doesn't make sense. Also, 4tb hdd failure rates are through the roof. You should get multiple 2tb hdds instead. A single 1tb ssd is probably a better option than two separate 512 gb ones unless you're going raid (and you really won't notice much of a difference with ssds).

overkill is fine, but it should at least make sense. Everything seems to be compatible and you should have no problem running 3 gpus at x16. Bare in mind this though: 3 or even 4 gpus are nowhere near enough to power 3 4k display unless you compromise heavily on detail settings.

Bare this in mind too, if you have no experience it just isn't going to happen.

for triple 4k, you're gonna need the extra VRAM that Titan Blacks provide. Even though you have quad SLI, your performance is actually worse than dual SLI. If money is no issue, I'd say get an EVGA SuperNOVA G2 1600W for 100$ extra just because dual/tri SLI Titan Black + OCing + Water Cooling.... The PSU will be overkill just like your build! :D

  1. Yes. But with the Asus X99E-WS motherboard you will be able to run all four at x16.
  2. I would suggest a 1500W psu if you plan to push the overclocking.
  3. Appears to be.
  • If the plan is to RAID 0 the ssd, don't. Get a 1TB unit instead.
  • I would have gone with two of the same model of hdd, even if they are going to be used for different things.
  • Did you consider the Phanteks Enthoo Primo case?

you currently own 3 4k monitors?

Yup. http://prntscr.com/4ql6c0

4k Surround Gaming. Going Complete Overkill.

I have 4k monitors. Sure, I will switch out the PSU to 1600.

Also what do you think would be better?

A 1600w platnium PSU  Or

A 1500w Titanium PSU?

1.I won't ditch any of the GPU's HOWEVER, I am curious about the CPU? Does it have 40 or more lanes? If so then I will probably buy it.

2. I forgot to mention that all storage options I already have on my old build so I will just be transferring them to the new build to save some money.

It should be enough since my 2 GTX 780's can handle 4k surround on bf4 on low detail.

1. I thought what really matters is the CPU lanes since most MOBO's have the PCIe slots on x16 anyways.

2. I just got a suggestion from the guy above to switch to a 1600w titanium power supply so that should be covered.

3. Thank you.

I am in raid 0 on my current build with those ssd and to save money I will just transfer the ssd's from my old build to my new one.

One is a HDD and the other is an SSHD, both 4tb. I own both as well.

I didn't consider the case but I think the 900D would work better for me.

I am not so concerned about vram since as of right now the only thing holding my back when is processing power. I think that with 4X4 gigs of vram should be fine. 16Gigs seems like enough.

The Haswell-E cpu support either 28 or 40 PCIe lanes. But the Asus X99E-WS motherboard provides additional lanes (using a PLX chip) to allow for full x16 operation of up to 4 gpu.

Ah alright I understand now.

So I should probably switch to a Asus X99E-WS and switch my CPU to a 5930k?

As I said, 4 gpus make. no. sense. And not in the sense that "you don't need them" but rather in the sense that the fourth one is just dead weight and it's eating up power for no reason. It might as well not be there and you wouldn't notice the difference.

The cpu I mentioned has the same lanes as the 5930k but it has 2 more cores.

if you already have the storage then fine.

Personally I would stick with two GTX 980 gpu, always presuming that Nvidia isn't going to be announcing a Titan or 990 in the near future. From any benchmarks I have seen, x8 is not going to throttle gpu performance. Although I haven't studied GTX 980 benchmarks to see if they may brush up against the constriction.

If you want an "overkill" build with 4 gpu then you should definitely switch the motherboard and cpu to get maximum performance.

Ah alright, I guess I will switch the mobo to a Asus X99-WS but do I need a better CPU then the 5930k since it only supports 40 lanes?

Also the reason why I am getting 4 980's is because of the vram.

Most people I've seen run surround 4k have used quad/tri SLI Titan Blacks (tri with a seperate card for PhysX which is really not needed) and it really would atleast let you game at medium-high settings with dual Blacks.. whereas quad 980's will do worse than dual 980's at almost any settings.

It would be dead weight because, as I said, it would make very little performance difference since the scaling is terrible with a fourth card and at that point it would be limited by vram and other factors. It's just not worth it.

You should switch to the 5960x if you really want to spend all that money and are willing to ditch the fourth 980.

Yup I switched, also I am using the 4th card for vram.

If you can find me a video or review that 3 way titan black is better then 4 way 980 in vram and processing power then I will switch it.

That's NOT what I said. I said 4 way sli 980s would be bottlenecked by vram AND scaling is very bad anyway so no point in bothering. Theoretically 4 titan blacks would outperform 4 980s because of that extra vram, however it would still be pretty much a waste of money. Check otu this video and specifically the benchmarks at the end, it shows that even 4 high end gpus aren't capable of 3 4k monitors and drop below 40 fps even at low settings.

Go for three cards and call it a day, you really shouldn't be throwing away your money like that. if you ahve more money than you know what to do with then give some in charity, they can certainly find a use for it.
