I bought an ASUS M51AC desktop a few months ago, and I was noticing some problems. I think the problem is that the store I bought it from told me all about the 16 GB of RAM, and the Eight-Core i7-4770, for only ~$1000. What they did not tell me, was that it had a GT 625 for a graphics card. I was thinking of getting a new GTX 770 or 970 to go with the great CPU. I have never built my own computer. Will I be able to fit a better GPU, and will my PSU be able to handle it? I don't really know much of the system specs other than the 16 GB of RAM, the CPU, the GPU, and the 2 TB Hard Drive. I am really new to this, and any help would be very appreciated.

Damn that's one seriously un-balanced rig.

I'd have to do some more research when I get home to see if a 770 or 970 would fit.

you will at least have to get a better PSU alongside the GPU

Sorry, I don't really know. I would probably have to power down and open it up to check. Maybe ASUS lists the PSU for the M51AC.

You will almost certainly need a larger PSU. You can easily do this for under $500. Assuming a 970 will fit, it is a much better option than the 770.

CPU: i9-13900k MOBO: Asus Strix Z790-E RAM: 64GB GSkill  CPU Cooler: Corsair H170i

GPU: Asus Strix RTX-4090 Case: Fractal Torrent PSU: Corsair HX-1000i Storage: 2TB Samsung 990 Pro

I think the 970 and the 770 are the same size, about 10.5 inches by about 4.5 inches, and dual-width.

Yes, but many of the prebuilt PC cases are not really designed for a full length GPU.

@AnonymousUser52, just to note, the older GTX 770 requires a 600W or greater PSU. Whereas the newer GTX 970 only requires a 500W or greater PSU. It's recommended to at least go for a 550W PSU just to give you a buffer. ;)

I did not know that, I guess I will look inside then.

Ok, When I look inside I will check the PSU and maybe get a new one.

  • 4 weeks later...

Sorry it took so long, but I looked in my computer and the motherboard, PSU, and possibly case will not allow for a 970/770. I have decided that I will probably save the CPU, RAM, and hard drive, obviously meaning I can keep my files, OS, and high quality components and then but the items here. http://pcpartpicker.com/user/Angrybear52/saved/rLPv6h . I also might get a 256 or 512GB SSD, to replace my hard drive or just add to storage space, and then transfer the OS and frequently used files. I did already buy the new motherboard,  but I would still appreciate any suggestions suggestions you all may have!
