Yes, sli 970s are a great option. I suggest you start with one and see if you're satisfied with the performance, if not then get the second one.

I disagree, there is no way a single 970 would suffice for 4k gaming.

I don't think there is anything that can run modern titles at 4k, ultra and 60fps.
If you get 2 980s, and overclock them to hell, then turn down anti-aliasing ( which you don't need all that much at 4k), then maybe you can get 60fps at 4k.

If you want a smooth gaming experience with modern titles at 4k at this point in time, you have to get 2 980s and a gsync monitor.

I'm doing 4k fine on a single R9 290, with a bit of compromise on the settings but only with very recent games. Yes, a single 970 can be enough.

I'm on the same boat as you. My asus sabertooth board only allows for 2-way sli. Right now I have 2x GTX 780ti in sli for 4k gaming on the pb287q. I get around 30-85 fps with an average of 60 on very high to ultra with low AA. Personally I'm thinking of upgrading to 2x r9 295x2 or something similar because I can run quadfire with 4 gpu's on 2x physical 16x slots in 8x and 8x.

CPU:Intel i7 4770k 4.3ghz MOBO: Asus Z87 Sabertooth RAM: 2x8GB RipJaws 1866mhz GPU: 2x GTX780ti SLI 1.2ghz SSD: 960GB 2x Intel 730 RAID0 CASE: Fractal Design Define S COOLING: Custom EK watercooling loop
