SSD Missing space

Go to solution Solved by xDArKzVeNoMx,

The two files C:\hiberfil.sys and C:\pagefile.sys take up the space that you figured was missing. They are used by these two features. When you turn them off and reboot the system, you can delete the files (If the system hasn't already.)

Well I already deleted my partition and did a new one and its better 1411688622-capture-d-ecran-1.png

My SSD have missing space , I know that Windows take some space but not so much . Watch on the pic , I got 58GB used on 111GB and if I check all the files in the SSD there is only 27GB used in it . Is it defective or something ? Yesterday I had more GB than that maybe because I updated Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 but its probably not that big . Note : I installed my SSD 2 days ago , I have no photos , videos , pictures or music .

The 120GB is expressed in SI gigabyte defined as 120 billion bytes exactly. This is the figure that manufacturers use to advertise their drives. However, computers use the definition of 1 KB = 1024 B, 1 MB = 1024 KB, and 1 GB = 1024 MB. Thus, 1 GB = 1024 * 1024 * 1024 bytes = 1,073,741,824 bytes as far as your computer is concerned.

AKA It's really 111GB

Sorry had to edit thought you were talking about partitions

Instead of highlighting the folders simply right click the empty space when you're inside of local disk C as you are in the screenshot to the right.

Doing this will count hidden folders as well.

I have a 120 GB SSD, (111 GB in actuality) and I have 63.5 GB remaining, and yesterday I installed the majority of the Adobe Creative suite as well as my other programs. I installed a fresh Windows 8.1 install the day before. Maybe try a clean install?

That is a lot of space to lose so quickly. Might want to check your Windows .Old folder see how much space that is taking. Also, try turning off system hibernation ( admin cmd prompt  and type powercfg /hibernate off " without quotes.

Also check if you have system restore enabled and how much space % it is using ( I have mine turned off but I make back-ups regularly . Those two fucnctions can eat up a lot of space on such a small drive !

Just an idea, but also look in App data .... something huge could be hiding in there !!!!

That's a really interesting tool, the interface makes to really easy to look at what's taking up space.

What are the two blue cubes?

Click on them to have it tell you what files they are.

If you NEVER hibernate Windows (this is not sleep mode either, but Hibernate mode I mean)

Disable it, it's always 'active' in use taking filespace (up2same amount as RAM size) when enabled and does nothing if you never use it.

You can disable it in a simple typed command and gain the filespace back thats equivalent to your RAM amount.

If you have 8GB of Ram Hibernation's file will be 8GB, like the pagefile.

Open a CMD Prompt WITH Admin RIghts. (You can find CMD.exe and then rightclick, Run as Admin)

type without quotes 'powercfg -h off'

Done. 8GB SSD Space Gained, you can still enter sleep mode.

You can always set a custom sized pagefile, with a minimum of 2GB to a Max of 8-16GB. By default it will be 8GB flat (Matched - If you have 8GB of Ram)

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

Well , I guess of I will delete my whole partition and install another clean Windows

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/15101-63-pagefile-hiberfil-gigantic-filling

do not delete your drive...  Page file and the hibernation file are taking up the 28gb discrepancy you pointed out in the op. Disable page file and hibernation then your problem is solved.

Yes it is. I was down to 800mb on my 120gb drive and had no idea what was taking up the space. I knew I could get at least 4gb free. I downloaded this tool and investigated what files were taking up space. I freed over 22gb of unused files and junk. I even keep all my data stored on a HDD but it still managed to use my SSD for somethings I didn't know about. It is a great program.

I already did and Idk why it would resolve the problem

The two files C:\hiberfil.sys and C:\pagefile.sys take up the space that you figured was missing. They are used by these two features. When you turn them off and reboot the system, you can delete the files (If the system hasn't already.)

It looks like your issue was "solved" by a reformat.

However, for future reference, Space Sniffer is a significantly better piece of software than WinDirStat in my techie opinion. Why? It lays out all of your file structure in a nice full screen layout. Each little box displayed is sized based on the filesize, and you can click on it to "zoom" into the entire structure. It's beautiful. I almost can't live without it.

Although based on your WinDirStat screenshot, it appears this post has the right info:

If you NEVER hibernate Windows (this is not sleep mode either, but Hibernate mode I mean)

Disable it, it's always 'active' in use taking filespace (up2same amount as RAM size) when enabled and does nothing if you never use it.

If it didn't work, then you may have not followed the steps correctly.
