Need new microphone

Go to solution Solved by Feronix,

Alright, awesome! By the way, the microphone comes with a holder that I can screw onto the mic stand, right?

Should do, yes. Or at least most of them do but I'm not sure about your specific model, sorry.

Hey, I want a microphone for skype, teamspeak, and recording youtube videos. I have around 100 dollars to spend, but there is one thing that is holding me back; my keyboard. I have a really loud keyboard (mechanical) and a somewhat loud pc, so I need a mic that is good at noise cancelling so people in skype etc. don't complain. I am also getting the Rode PSA1, so the mic is a bit above my keyboard. I was thinking of getting the Samson C03U with the SP01 shock mount, thoughts?

That Samson is a condensor mic, I have the C01 (non USB version) and it's great, but because it's a condensor mic (and also picks up background sound) people can definitely hear me typing over Skype.

You might be better off getting a dynamic mic which doesn't pick up surrounding noises, with the disadvantage of having to move it right up to your mouth. Shouldn't be a very big problem as you're getting the PSA1 though.

Alright, any recommendations for one? I also would like a shockmount if possible please. oh, 150 dollar budget :)

Edit: Oh, and if it's possible could it be usb? ;-; I don't want to have to deal with that phantom power stuff

I have utterly no idea what I need for XLR microphones to work; but here is my attempt at it;

Mic: Shure SM 58 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000AQRSU/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

Mic Holder: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000EEHM8U/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A311BEHFUHRLQM

Mic Stand: Rode PSA1 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001D7UYBO/ref=ox_sc_act_title_7?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

Phantom Power ?: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000XUUXB8/ref=ox_sc_act_title_5?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER (I don't need it since it's dynamic, right?)

XLR Cable ?: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000RYE5Y6/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=AD6O342M484G6

XLR to USB cable ?: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B6WZGHS/ref=ox_sc_act_title_4?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A1155GBV4DPEXU (If I don't need phantom power, I think I just need this cable right?)

Generic wind screen: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002GXF8Q/ref=ox_sc_act_title_6?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

I know this isn't ideal because I need like a mixer or something, but would it work decently? I would prefer if the price stayed the same, this is pushing my budget a bit.

Oh, and do I need like an adapter for my mic to go into the stand, that kinda stuff.

As that is a dynamic mic, you won't need Phantom power, no. Shure make some very good microphones so that one will definitely serve you well.

Personally, I'd purchase an XLR > 3.5mm input jack (make sure it has 2 rings on it, otherwise it might only do mono audio which could mean that you only get your recorded sound from the left).

You don't really need a windscreen if you're sitting inside, but a popfilter might help if you're worried about the way in which you pronounce your Ps.

Could also get a shockmount, so you can hit your desk all you want without causing vibrations in the PSA1>Mic clip> microphone. Although both the shockmount and popfilter are usually only used in combination with condenser microphones. I'd just get the PSA1 + clip + cable + microphone first and then you can always add a popfilter and/or shockmount later if you feel like it would improve anything.

Ok, thanks! I would put the mic in the clip and It will screw right into the PSA1, right? Oh and also, my on board audio and sound card both broke, so now I use this ghetto usb sound card that makes everything super loud so I am kinda confused on what I should do. It also makes thing kinda staticy, so I'm not sure if should get USB or not. If I get the USB to XLR cable, will I be alright? And although it probably won't help, I'm getting the windscreen to cut down on my pc fans (hopefully.)

Why not throw in 30 dollars or so extra and get a Xonar DGX? Proper sound card for the money and it has actual sound in- and outputs rather than USB (which can cause delays) :P

I had a nice video card, but dual video cards made so much heat, so it died in a few months :o

Oh also, I could possibly afford a mixer. What cables would I need?

What about an external sound interface, such as the soon-to-come Focusrite Scarlett Solo? I'm getting one myself that I can just plug into my motherboard USB :)

I have no idea about mixers mate, I don't use them. I record the audio as-is and then edit it with software if needed.

If you're worried about background noise, save yourself some money and just pick up a modmic. Unless you're a big youtuber anyway, the slightly lower sound quality won't matter.

I wouldn't bother with that. Either go Blue icicle which is a plug and play one or the Scarlett for more control over your mic.

I would, but bad reviews. What about this

That xonar is really bad. I had it and it has a constant hiss. I think you should just stick with usb mics. Your budget doesn't really allow for xlr. The main point of xlr is to use an audio interface like the 2i2. Just grab a audiotechnica at2020usb or the blue yeit. In my opinion, those mics are already better than you need. If you need a replacement for your onboard, get a syba dac instead.

Too bad I can't plug a non-USB mic into my Objective.  Oh well, it's not a big deal.

I wish I could get a simple usb microphone, but I really need a dynamic microphone speaking a condenser microphone would pick up my extremely noisy environment. I have seem a few Audio Technica dynamic usb mics at around 50 bucks, but I really want something better sounding like the Shure. I really don't need much control over it, just basic sensitivity settings which are obviously on the windows settings. Anyways, I understand it's not the best but which would you say is better?

Getting an XLR to 3.5mm Cable & USB Soundcard/Dac

or

Just a plain XLR to USB cable such as

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005HH2GCQ/ref=gno_cart_title_0?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A1BREQ8I6OHSBG

Oh and about the modmic, I hear it's detachable but I don't want the hassle. I carry my headphones around a lot, and everytime I put them in the case I don't want to have to remove the mic.

Mic: Shure SM 57  - I decided to get this over the SM58 because it lets you get a tad further away from the mic, which is something I would love to be able to do.

Mic Stand: Rode PSA1

XLR to 3.5mm Cable:

Soundcard:

Shure Windscreen:

After talking to a lot of people, here is what I came up with. Any final suggestions/advice?

Personally, for the price I'd rather buy a Xonar DGX than a Creative card, they're not all that good bu other than that it seems like a decent set-up for your budget :)

Thanks for all your help! I have spent numerous days on numerous forums, and you were one of the few that actually helped me :) And I love Xonar, but I couldn't find a PCIe version in my price range. But I looked again and I found the DGX you were talking about. Thanks :D! but anyways, the cable I got will work right? Like do I need the male to 3.5mm or did I get the right one?

No worries matey, audio can be quite confusing and also very personal but I'm happy to help :)

The Asus cards all come in a PCI version (DG, D2, ST) and PCI-E version (DGX, D2X, STX) so all of them ending with an X should be PCI-E compatible.

The cable should be fine, I use a similar one (from the Phantom Power: XLR > 6.3mm and then a 6.3>3.5 adaptor) and it's fine. The XLR end has to be female (holes) cause the microphone has a male (pins) XLR end. The 3.5mm jack should be male to go into the pink/red port on your computer/ sound card.
