This isn't a problem with my computer, it's for my friend's PC that I built for him. We've both gone to university, and while transporting our PCs we removed the GPUs in case something happened to them in transit.

Basically he can't get his PC to run off the display input for the GPU (an R9 270X). At first, he plugged it in and the fans wouldn't spin. We both couldn't remember whether both the 6 pin and 2 pin power cables needed to be plugged in, but today he's told me the fans on the GPU are now spinning with just the 6 pin. However, when he goes to plug the DVI cable into it, the monitor doesn't receive a signal. When we switch it to the mobo DVI port to get a signal, a message comes up saying something about CCC needs to be updated. I took him through the process of updating the drivers, but it doesn't even try to install them. In the CCC hardware section under Information, it doesn't display his GPU in there...

I'm not sure what to do. If anyone could give some advice I would appreciate it. :)

  1. Completly Uninstall the CCC drivers then restart

look in bios and check the GPU is showing up

mess around in the BIOS looking for anything about forcing the GPU as main graphics insted of the iGPU

Boot and install the latest CCC Drivers, may want to use the Auto select and download tool instead of manually finding it.

once installed reboot and check BIOS and then check in the CCC settings.

We've checked the board explorer in the bios but the GPU doesn't show up, which leads me to believe it's a problem with the PCI-E slot on the motherboard... I've told my friend to find somebody who owns a PC and ask if he can test the GPU in their slot, so hopefully we can find out which component is the problem... thanks for your help though. ;)

Tell your friend to check the GPU has proper power going to it and try it in a diffrent PCI slot.

That's the thing... He doesn't have another PCI-E slot - he has an MATX motherboard. :/ There are 2 6 pin slots for the GPU but the PSU only comes with one 6+2 pin. It worked fine before we moved it.

plug it into any other PCI slot, and the gpu may just not work due to the lack of power going to it, its 2x 6 pins for a reason.

What MB and GPU (R270x?) and PSU does he have?

Motherboard is an MSI H87M G43, PSU is a Corsair CX430 and the GPU is a 270X, yes.

I know both power slots should be connected, but the card had been running with that single PCI cable for about 3 months before my friend moved it and it was perfectly fine - there were literally no problems with it.
