I recently bought a r9 280x & after I installed it I got a warning 3.3v voltage 3.744. soon after that it started shutting down. the power supply is 750 watts so lack of power shouldn't be an issue. any ideas as to what's going on ?

It's not shutting down from lack of power, it is shutting down from too much power on the 3.3v rail...

okay so what do I do

If you have another power supply available switch it out and see if it still gives the error, if not you found the problem, if the error persists it is unlikely but it could be the motherboard, my bet is the psu.
