Looking for a good basic linux OS

Hey My uncle is taking my old laptop (core duo 2ghz, 3gb ram, 256 gb HDD). He wants a new HDD and a new OS over vista. What LINUX OS would you recommend. It has to be basic. but functional and free. 

p.s. any guides to installing/using Linux would also be great.
