What is directX12 ... ?

I have a question what is directx12 and what does it cause on the nvidia site it says new graphics cards spport directx12 and i have windows 7 on my pc cause some people said me that windows 7 dosnt support directx12 and im going to buy a 980 this week ?

From the rumors i've seen,  Windows 7 will not fully support directx12, only windows 8 and above. Directx12 will allow developers to optimise games better and add more features to the game.

Directx is something called an API. In short, it's a tool that allows videogames in particular (but other programs as well) to get "faster" access to the graphics card (lower level access in technical terms). DX12 is the latest version of dx and it is not out yet. It will improve performance in games that support it. Windows 7 however will not support dx 12 (dick move microsoft) therefore with windows 7 you won't be able to take advantage of it. In theory any gpu that supports dx 11 will support dx12. The fact that windows 7 doesn't support dx12 doesn't mean your card won't work, it simply won't be able to use dx12.

in short, the 980 will still work with windows 7. it just can't use directx12

Wait for windows 9, it shouldn't be long before it's released

supposedly there will be a "nerfed" variant of DX12, called DX11.3 for all other OS'.

Also, if you get windows 8, you can install startisback+ so that it works just like windows 7, you will also have the start menu just like in windows 7

A big part of DX12 is CPU optimisation - Mantle dramatically reduced CPU overhead, so people who weren't running high-end CPUs could still get great performance higher settings, because the game wasn't asking way too much out of their CPU.

 

DX12 aims to do this as well, utilizing the GPU much more than the CPU - right now, many games will use 80%+ of the CPU, and only 50-60% of the GPU when gaming. This is not right. So, 12 aims to correct this, and allow better graphics while being more streamlined, by using more of the GPU, and reducing overhead of the CPU.
