I do not recommend Microsoft security essential, in testing it does not do very well at detecting things. If you want free look at something like Avast, or panda cloud av, avg. personally I use avast and panda and have never had issues although I am a "smart" user.

On Windows 7, use Microsoft Security Essentials. On Windows 8 it's integrated within the Security Center.
For both OS' you could install Malwarebytes' if you have doubts but I do not recommend using both their real-time services in the same time. Use Malwarebytes' to scan the system only.

i don't use any 3rd party protection, win8 security works fine if you don't click on anything stupid. But if you're definitely in need of antivirus, Malwarebytes works great.
