GPU for HDTV, How much is overkill?

So I probably just fell in love with the GTX 980 and once again I find myself at this dilemma.

 

The machine I'm building will be hooked up to a 1080p HDTV. So it will be stuck at 1920x1080 at 60Hz. (building the family Steambox)

 

I want something power efficient and able to run anything at the best settings (and enhancements for older games and emulation).

But I fear that something as powerful as the 980, or even the 780Ti, would just have too much of the GPU going to waste.

 

I'd love to hear some thoughts on this scenario.

I'm left wondering if a GTX 780 might be the most suitable option given this setup.

I'd disagree. 780Ti isnt really overkill for 1080p gaming, considering that games are now only gonna get more demanding, regardless of resolution. But the 900 series does have a cool feature that puts the unused cores to work and power managment featres that boosts other components when parts of the gpu is idle.

780 might be a little over kill, but then again, I play on 720p with my 780

I'd say a 760/770 would be good, if you want a 970/960.

970 is the sweet spot in my opinion.

I'll have to give the 970 a serious look then.

970 is not 1080p at all... it's beyond it since it has 4gb vram and it's meant to be used for higher resolutions.
I'd say 270x, 285, 280x

I would go with a GTX 770 honestly

 

When the latest generation comes out, it will be super expensive, whereas the 770 will not be, you will be able to get a 770 for a significant discount.

 

The 770 is perfect for 1080p anyways at the moment.

Depends on what games u r going to play.
Its a little extra for 1080p but if u want sweet 60fps in all the games then go for the Gtx 980

After the release of the 900 series nVidia is going to discontinue the Gtx 770,780 and the 780 ti.

So decide fast.
Or wait for the Gtx 960.

Though the R9 280x is also a great option.

Yeah, so maybe the extra features of the 900 series will be enough to justify using them even in a smaller resolution, especially if it can give extra visual flare to older games.

Their is no such thing as overkill.

The better the GPU the longer it will last you while it might seem overkill for 1080p right now it won't be in 2-3 years.
