I don't see the problem; It's not like the 980/ti is going to outperform 780SLI. If the price is right for the newer cards, then you should consider two of those though.

Ahem...4k user here. I'll take every bit of horsepower my 780 SLI offers.

 

It's even beneficial for 1440p as well, as I previously played at the resolution.

He already has a 780 though

I am not so sure. He has no current build specs on his profile and his signature is for an upcoming rig.

Nobody needs a computer, but almost every piece of medical equipment is a computer.

Yeah it's a future build with no specific deadline to have it built. If the GTX 980 is reasonable and preforms better for what I need which as I said was to have something capable of doing serious blender animation. I could technically go for a cheaper gpu until I became more skilled with Blender but I feel like I might as well invest upfront. 

And I also want to play some games...

This is me whenever I look at my bank balance and see that I have some cash, look in my pc's window, and notice that my gtx 780 is getting a little lonely with that empty pciex16 slot next to it:
