Overclocking a Core 2 Duo e8400

Go to solution Solved by Ryan Leech,

So...there is no way of overclocking it with the xw4600...?

Not unless you do some crazy mods which are above most people's heads

Hey!

I have been thinking of overclocking my C2D e8400 to like 3.6-4GHz to get some more juice out of it. The thing is that I am a newb to overclocking and I wanted to know if there was anything I would need to know about it or of any restrictions.

I have a xw4600 HP workstation with 4x1GB DDR2 667MHz RAM and a 475W PSU.

I am planing to get a Hyper 212 evo for cooling the cpu and I have some arctic cooling MX-4 handy.

Thanks!

In order to overclock your E8400 you're going to need a motherboard that allows for overclocking. A decent motherboard will probably run you $35-50 on ebay. I think in your case it would be less expensive to simply upgrade to a Q6600 or a Q9550

[AMD Athlon 64 Mobile 4000+ Socket 754 | Gigabyte GA-K8NS Pro nForce3 | OCZ 2GB DDR PC3200 | Sapphire HD 3850 512MB AGP | 850 Evo | Seasonic 430W | Win XP/10]

Try the PLL :)

Based on what I've seen it looks as if the PLL is the long chip to the left of the northbridge heatsink.

Yeah, I saw that solution, but apparently. it doesn't work...

Is the specific PLL chip not supported by SetFSB or ClockGen? From my findings the PLL is the SLG505YC264BT, which is supported by SetFSB on their website. However this could vary on revision.

I don't know. I was searching, and apparently it is impossible to overclock with motherboard. Some have tried with various overclocking programs with the xw4600, but have failed.
