if you are looking for the BEST then you want one of the new 8 core i7's but out of those two you mentioned the i7 is the best for rendering, though I would go with one of the newer onesif you go for the lga 1150 i7

Where the hell is everyone pulling these 5820K's and Xeons from.... OP wanted a 4770k or 8350, I think that should give you guys somewhat of an idea of what price point we're talking about here.

@SirLeeLoo

A warm welcome to Linus Tech Tips! Between those two the 4700K will be better, however if you can then stretch to the newer 4790K, it's not that much more expensive.

If you're doing rendering and gaming at the same time then the i7 4770k is much worth it than the FX-8350. Purely rendering, the FX-8350 is on par with the i7. WIth the money you saved getting the FX-8350, you could get an exceptional CUDA-enabled card for GPU Acceleration in most NLE's out there.

If your on a budget (judging from your picks) and looking for any great improvement over your current system.

Then...

The 8350/8370 is a nice boost for encoding times, $ not that expensive,...but can be slower in gaming when it comes to average FPS and maxfps compared to the competition.

The intel i5 however, is pretty solid for gaming, and the stronger but lesser amount of cores can be a nice balance in between for improved rendering times, just not as good as the 8350.

Either of these is a huge improvement to what you have and your use case.

IMO I'd go for the i5 CPU because stronger cores will shine on non-multithreaded apps, and when multithreaded its STILL a far-cry better than your current setup, and not much slower than the 8350 (unless your rendering hours of work)

OP - You should have stated your budget.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

I was thinking about a Intel i7 4770k or a AMD FX-8350.

Intel hands down, but 4790K. AMD will not have upgrade path and it is keeping up in rendering. but falling behind in gaming.

Intel i7 2600 @ 4.2 Ghz | MSI Z77-GD55 | Crucial 16 GB DDR3 RAM 1600Mhz | Intel 330 SSD 180Gb | Western Digital Black 1Tb | Western Digital Green 2Tb | Gigabyte GTX 650 Ti | OCZ ModXStream Pro 500W | Thermaltake Commander MS-I case | OS X Yosemite | Dell Vostro 3550 Windows 10

Intel Xeon 1230 V2 | Gigabyte GA-H61M-S | Kingston 4Gb RAM 1333Mhz | Seagate 1TB  | Fractial Design Arc mini | Windows 10
