PSU Rail voltages

So I decided to check on my pc "stats" so to speak and I found something rather alarming: My 12 volt rail is 8V.

Time for a new PSU? :D

Just a bogus reading, don't worry about it.

Well this PSU is about 4-5 years old so I wouldn't be surprised to be honest.

Just read that if the 12V is on 8V then the system (or at least the GPU) should not be functional. Is this true?

 

(Don't know much about PSU's aside from which ones are the good ones :P)

Get a new PSU, that one is dying or dead. I'm amazed that the power good is still active and allowing the system to boot.

Even more so, it can supply my graphics card with the max wattage it can consume.

HWiNFO is showing the correct voltages. Is HWmonitor just plain bad?

Monitoring software is hit and miss when it comes to voltages, you could probably find just as many systems where HWiNFO gets it wrong. At the end of the day, measuring with a multimeter is the only way to really know what's going on.
