Hi Linus,

Long time listener/follower, on the web when you were with ncix. Very new to your forum.

Help! Help! Help!

I am building a new workstation i7 intel pc for work and play (with help from pro. Tech.) This pc will be used for lots of cad designing, Photo editing, video editing, music producting, watching tv, movies, etc.

OS: windows 7 professional ultimate

Music Production software: pro-tool, mixcraft pro

Design softwares: autodesk autocad architectural 2014, solidworks, 3D max, maya, revit

Photo editing software: adobe cuda, photoshop light, photo shop cs6,

Video editing: avid media, premiere pro cs5

So far, I have purchased these items:

1.            CASE: Lian Li PC-80 Aluminum ATX full tower computer case

2.            POWER SUPPLY: Enermax Galaxy EVO 1250 watts

3.            MOTHERBOARD: ASUS P9X79-E WS LGA 2011 Intel X79 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 SSI CEB Intel Motherboard

4.            PROCESSOR/CPU: Intel core i7 3930k 2011 socket x79 platform

5.            PROFESSIONAL WS GRAPHIC CARD: AMD FirePro V7900 2GB WS graphic card

6.            Memory/Ram: (2x=32GB) G.Skill Ripjaws Z series 16GB (4x4gb) DDR3 SDRAM 2133mHz Note: design for the  new intel LGA 2011 platform

7.            Cooler: Corsair Hydro series H100i

9.            Front usb 3.0 hub: Sedna 3.5" Internal 7-Port USB 3.0 Floppy Bay Hub

Optical media: asus cd dvd burner and lg blue-ray burner

My problem is – afraid of buying the harddrives because I need your expert advice. This is what I will like my setup to be if it is possible. I will like to have (2) 128GB ssd drives as boot-up drive. Or do I do raid 5 using (3) 128gb ssd drives using/with adaptec 5445z controller. Or use ocz 128gb cache drive to a Seagate 250gb hybrid drive. Or just use (1) 256gb ocz new ssd drive? Boot-up drive will only be used for boot-up only! Never for downloads and program installation. As long as I do not have to go in manual each time I have to download on the internet. Can the pc be manually set once and only once, that when I am downloading music or photos or just regular document it will automatically go into the designated file/assigned storage HDD?

Next, if it is possible, (because data protection is very important as well is storage). I will like to use raid 5 using  adaptec 5445z controller and 1 ocz 128gb cache drive with (3) 750gb Seagate hybrid h drives? I do not trust nor like the cloud storage system do not trust them. Will like to use a 3tb hhd with ocz 128gb as my storage drive. But is it even useful if I will also be doing raid 5 on my main storage drives?

Please advice how to proceed. What type and brand of HHD should be used. Or the correct way to do this.

As soon as I can get your advice and directions than I will proceed in buying the currect item to start the build. Thank in advance…..dunn

That's a lot of money you've already thrown away...

Just get a Samsung 840 250GB and use it for boot and applications. For hdds, get a bunch of Seagate barracuda 3TB's and you'll be fine. Do a raid 5 or 6 with them.

For downloads and other stuff you just go to the properties and change the location. It's nothing fancy.

For your pictures/docs/videos/etc. You just change the location

I would maybe use a Raid0 with 2x 256GB SSDs (like the Samsung 830/840 Pro) for bootdrive and programms. This would make working really really fast. Boot 1x 256GB would be enough for starters i think. (depends on your budget)

Also get a proper Raid5 setup with decent drives (like WD RED or WD SE) for storage. Maybe you even want to do a raid 1 or 10 with bigger drivers instead of a raid5, its much safer.

The poster above already explained some of the process of enabling windows libraries to store data on the raid5 area.

I would maybe get a programm like Genie9 Timeline Pro too dump your boot & programm partition onto a small part of the raid5 so you can quickly recover from a broken SSD and still have everything safe. (That particular programm you can set to dump changes on that drives every 3 minutes)

PS. Whats your budget?
