Hello everyone,

I built my pc a while ago and I installed my gtx 780ti into the 3rd graphics card slot, counting from above. The motherboard is a rampage IV black edition. The reason I installed it into the 3rd slot is because I didn't know if the upper slot delivers better performance (I still don't know) and because I thought it was a good idea to leave some space between my massive cpu cooler and my gpu. Should I replace my gpu to the upper slot for better performance? Or does it not make any difference?

Please let me know if you have some advice,

Thanks!

The upper slot is always 16x. THe 2nd slot is usually 8x and the third slot is usually 4x (assuming only 3 slots). In general 4x PCIe 3.0 is enough but I would put it at least in the 8x slot. At 4x 3.0 (which is 8x 2.0) the performance can wiggle a bit (A few percent in the performance index) but 8x PCIe 3.0 is more than enough.

Wow, I'm probably a huge idiot right now.... xD

Not at all. The logic is there, more space for temps and stuff like that. It's really not necessary though. Just put it in the second slot if you want a bit more room between the CPU cooler and the GPU or in the top slot if you feel like it's not necessary.

I have some inconsistent fps when gaming, might this improve that if I replace to the upper slot?

It might. Try putting it in the top slot and see what happens. Otherwise check your temperatures using MSI afterburner or EVGA Precision X to see if it is throttling (Same for your CPU but use coretemp or HWmonitor to check those temps).

  • Expansion Slots
    4 x PCIe 3.0/2.0 x16 (x16 or dual x16 or x16/x8/x16 or x16/x8/x8/x8, black) *1

    2 x PCIe 2.0 x1

This is what the Asus site tells me about the slots

In short this means it doent matter what slot you use ....your card will run fine in any of them.   None of the slots run at X4 no matter how many or which slot you run your card/cards  in.

If you use 2 cards in the top 2 slots those slots run at x16  ....if you use 3 cards in the top 3 slots it runs x16 (1st slot) x8(2nd slot) x16(3rd Slot),  if you run 4 cards it runs x16(1st slot) , x8(2nd slot) , x8 (3rd) and x8(4th).
