Apperanly I am cursed because this is the 3rd laptop I bought in the last 2 years and I am having problems yet again. But this problem is rather bizarre. I have the Lenovo Y50 with Windows 8.1 installed and the screen flickers sometimes when the laptop is charging. The flicker happens when I'm holding the laptop on an uneven surface (my lap) but not on a table.

And the weirdest thing is I thought this was just a problem with the connector from the mobo to the screen but it can't be because the flicker only occurs while charging. I I unplug the laptop while it is flickering the flicker stops.

Here is a video of the flicker, it intensifies towards the end.

Why does it happen when it is charging only? And why only when the laptop is on my lap?

I have managed to pinpoint the exact orientation laptop needs to be for screen to start flickering. It has to be 30 degrees to the back away from me.

Fucking hell, why do most bizarre hardware problems find me whenever I buy a laptop.

If it's only in a specific orientation it might be worth it to open it up and check the connections

When the laptop is plugged in, it switches to the dedicated graphics(NVidia 860M for the Y50 I believe). Could be a bad chip or a bad connection to the chip.

Try forcing it to use the integrated graphics when it is plugged in and charging, and see if the flicker stops.

Did you find a solution to this?

I'm in the same boat and desperate for answers. Bought mine (Y50-70) in Europe and brought it with me to The Dominican Republic. Small flickers when I charge it (afaik) and I REALLY don't want it to fail on me while I'm here. Big questions are; does it lead to a bigger problem? Does it damage the battery? Had none of the problems at home, which makes me wonder if it could be related to the change in eletrical systems, from 220v to 110v.

Anyway, I'd love to hear how it went with your laptop!

Please let me know :)

Hi,

3 months ago my Y50 started to flicker all the time. First time only while charging, then all the time. I had send it to service and it came back with a new screen. After 1 month with the new screen it started to have total Black Screens. Only rebooting was getting the screen back to work. Just had a call with the technician at Lenovo and he said it should be the connection cable.

Amazing troubles with the screen and hope it will finaly work after replacing CABLE + SCREEN.
