I like recording games A LOT, but unlike most people i record games for myself and not for youtube. I also record games from my PS3/4.

I already have a Elgato game capture HD, however i'm really starting to miss 5.1 audio. Some games just need to have it, one such game is god of war 3. The whole game is so epic when ur playing with 5.1 audio that it's just not as good when watching in stereo. So what i'm looking for is a way to record 5.1 audio from my PS3/4 (i record pc games with fraps).

I have done lots and lots of searching but can't find the right hardware to do this. There's a few devices that can do 5.1 audio, but for me to record 5.1 audio from my PS3 i HAVE to use the optical out. Right now i'm using a DVI to HDMI cable to a box that does DVI to HDMI with stereo audio(using the analog cable from the ps3). This strips the HDCP so the video is higher quality.

The only device i found that can do 5.1 audio over optical is the hauppage HD PVR2 gaming edition plus. But the 13Mbit video seems low to me. I've tried a long time to find something else but i just can't find anything else. So what i'm hoping for is that someone here knows of something better...

1080p30 is fine but if there is something that can do 5.1 with 1080p60... would be awesome :)

Money is not really an issue, but i really need just 1 device, doesn't matter if its USB2.0 or USB3.0 or PCIe...

PS. Not entirely sure the topic belongs in pc gaming, so if its not suppose to be here, please move it :P

well... this a PC Game section and you are talking about PS3/4 maybe thats the reason no one has replied back

about the capture card have you looked at the avermedia capture card? I think that hardware is good for what it can do, but I dont think it will record a 5.1 audio

but if you are recording your games for everyone to see, you must factor that not everyone has a 5.1 audio at home

weird... no views and no replies... 2nd time this happens when i started a topic... am i doing something wrong? Or are my questions just to difficult :(

well a kick then.. hoping someone will help after all :(.

There are actually 77 views. You're not doing anything wrong, the forum software can be funny sometimes. I can never see my thread views either until it's active. As for your question, it sounds like you've already done a little research into 5.1 and recording. As you have probably found, there really aren't a lot of options for 5.1 recording. The mass majority of people record with the purpose of sharing with others, who mostly have 2 or 2.1 setups. So even when you find things that are compatible with 5.1, it gets downmixed to 2.1 in the recording.

I don't have much experience with capture cards anymore, I use software only now. I believe OBS can do it with a plugin that I can't seem to find anymore, I also thing DxTory is capable of recording 5.1. As far as hardware goes, I really don't think there's anything good that records 5.1 natively on the consumer end, so you'll have to look at intensity pro or the decklink stuff from blackmagic... And that can get very pricey very quickly

I am good at computer

well i don't really need it for pc games. As i said i use fraps for that which does a perfect job of recording 5.1. I also sometimes record tv shows from my STB, so its not entirely for console games :P. would be nice to be able to get 5.1 from that as well...

I think i also mentioned i don't really record for others :P mostly for myself hehe. I know its weird :|.

i also checked the blackmagic stuff, the intensity pro can only do stereo, so that's no option. Didn't know about decklink stuff, the decklink mini recorder would be an option if it had an optical input.. but it doesn't so thats unfortunate. Ur right about it getting pricey very quickly but as i see it none of them have an optical input.

So blackmagic doesn't have what i want either :(.

I also tried to look for soundcards with an optical input to record the audio and mux it into the video later... can't seem to find that either. Oh well, if i can't find anything ill just go with the GE plus from hauppage. Read an idea somewhere to plug in both devices (GE+ and gamecapture HD) and take the video from one and audio from the other... might try that then :D
