Hello,

at this time I'm starting gathering information on storage solutions for my system.

I've decided on the following:

  • I'll be using WD red 4tb-drives.
  • The data should be stored independent of my PC.
  • I want to be able to upgrade the number of HDDs anytime.
  • Hotswap would be "nice-to-have" for maintainance of dieing harddrives.
  • I want to be able to set appropriate RAID (most likely: 1) at any given time.
  • It won't be necessary for me to access my data through other means besides the PC (at this time, anyways).
  • Later on I might want to be able (with a minor upgrade) to stream video and/or music directly through my storage device to my TV.

That said, my starting setup will hold only one WD RED 4tb and will be upgraded as data flows in.

At this point, I am looking for a silent solution, since the device will be set up in my "living and sleeping"-appartment.

My budget may be limited, but I'm not that picky if I get a proper setup, which should support me for a long time.

I'd be very thankful for recommendations!

Best Regards,

W.

I built a cheap home server, using an Intel G3220 and msi motherboard ( I chose z97 but there were specific features I wanted you could pick a cheaper board) , a good powersupply rated for 24/7 operation, and a quiet case (a sound proofed define mini), I am using windows home server (I use raid 10)

You could do something similar, and run FreeNAS or something on there and run it as an upgradable home server

For the lowest cost option, just buy a nas enclosure and shove your drive in,

Tek Syndicate's Review:

not sure if it can hot-swap...

Edit: This might be a bit on the expensive side so I'd suggest what @ShadowCaptain suggested...

Get the cheapest board with the most SATA ports and the cheapest compatible CPU and RAM...

Install FreeNAS on it (better use a small SSD as a boot drive for this since FreeNAS will use the entire boot drive)...

There is the cheap option of AM1 and a 2350 or something, super cheap!

I wouldn't bother with FreeNAS if you aren't going to be using Server stuff to utilize ZFS.

Amahi is a better file server for simpler, weaker, builds imo.

Also, why use an SSD over a USB drive for FreeNAS' OS?

My mistake... I forgot that FreeNAS was small enough to fit in a USB...

I need to read up on Amahi though...

It's cool.

Amahi is basically FreeNAS but focused more on simplicity and user friendliness minus the enterprise level stuff that most consumers won't care about.
