Logitech G710+ Modding

I have recently been thinking about modding my Logitech G710+ by painting it, as seen in this thread.

Instead, I was thinking of trying a matt black finish over the whole of the plastic surround.

I have no clue about spray paint, so just wanted to ask if this would be the right stuff to use (Flat Black Matt (C29) option)

Has anyone else tried this?

Would be very grateful if someone had and could post pictures of the finished keyboard so I could decide if it's a good idea or not?

I just thought that it could look nicer without the glossy plastic finish.

Thanks

Having used it myself, I would recommend you use Rustoleum's Flexi-Dip or Performix's Plasti-Dip. They are non-permanent finishes and they are safe for use on electronics from my experience.

I haven't tried this mod, but I am thinking about it now.

+1 for Plasti-dip.

The only thing is: Can Plasti-dip "do" matte finish?

Yeah, Plasti-Dip is matte by nature. To make it gloss, you get Performix's Glossifier for Plasti Dip.

I dipped my C70, pictures will come in a new topic soon.

Good idea as it's non-permanent

Is this the same stuff? Just appears to be cheaper than the Performix one

The only problem with doing the whole surround is that I would either have to tape over the area for the logo so it doesn't get covered (which would look a bit odd once it was finished) or just go over the logo.

That stuff looks to be right.

You can mask off the logo with painter's tape, go over it with an exacto knife when you are done and peel it off easy.

Okay thanks, bought it.

OHHHHHH THIS IS RIGHT UP MY ALLEY. I did some mods to my g710+... and all my other keyboards.

First thing DO NOT USE PLASTIDIP. IT WILL PEEL. I made a complete and comprehensive painting guide here.

http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/205502-the-proper-way-to-paint-your-pc-stuff/

I have green switches for all the modifiers, and blues for all my letter keys.

I originally had this keycap set, http://www.maxkeyboard.com/max-universal-black-translucent-mechanical-keyboard-keycap-set.html with these for the macros, http://www.maxkeyboard.com/r4-1x1-cherry-mx-dice-keycap-set.html.

I eventually migrated to this set, http://www.maxkeyboard.com/r4-1x1-cherry-mx-dice-keycap-set.html. Those keys are doubleshot and the letters use a transparent plastic for backlighting. The main case is orange, and the surrounding case is pearl white, the accent on the g keys is repainted orange. It turned out really nice.

I urge you to reconsider and DON'T USE ANY OF THE RUBBERIZED PAINTS. They will chip, and peel within a month. You will have a bad looking keyboard and no paint. That is no way to live.

I am in the process of making a keyboad modding guide. That should be done by the end of the week. I will post it here then. My most modded board is my DAS, you can check out what I did to it here http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/208289-das-keyboard/

I'm not going to post pictures of my board(s), If you want to know why, shoot me a personal message.

So even though 404 suggested not to use Plastidip I decided to go ahead and do it anyway.

Here is my reasoning:

As it is non-permanent then I can use it as a test to see what it would look like without risking ruining it too badly.

I don't have the tools or really the time to do it properly as 404 suggested so I thought it would be worth trying it this way and just see how it comes out.

I won't be too bothered if it does peel after a little while as it was still a fun project and didn't take too much time/money.

So after that, here are some pictures of the project. Let me know if you want any more pictures or information. I ended up doing 2 thin coats and 2 thick coats of plastidip.

Picture before I started to compare the finished product:

Here are the melted plastic pieces which need to be picked off the remove the orange surround and the black surround:

Once they are picked off:

Pictures after the second thin coat to help it bind:

Finished product pictures:

I think it looks good at the moment, prefer the matte effect to the glossy. As well it now being black rather than orange for the macro key surrounds.

If it lasts a while I will be very pleased with it, but at the same time if it doesn't I won't be too bothered and could consider painting it properly as it may be worth it.

Looks Nice. Definitely has a different look to it than my pearly white and orange G710+

Since you only did the inside, it may not peel for a while +/- 2 Months. But my only warning will be, if you start to see it peeling, REMOVE IT ALL. If it begins to flake, it can get under your plate and into your PCB and that is not fun to clean. Plastidip may work differently in regards to chipping and flaking, but I have had one of my boards chip and I nearly destroyed my PCB trying to clean it. The paint also got into some of the switches so I had to remove them all, clean them, and re-lube them, finally I had to re-soldier them.

Any chance I could see a picture of your G710+?

That's what I was hoping as it shouldn't get worn away as it isn't being touched whilst using the keyboard.

Thanks for the tip :) I will remove it all if it starts peeling and will post here when I do that so people will know how long it lasted.
