For Windows 8/8.1

Use built in Windows Defender as every day Antivirus (as its now an actual antivirus) and Malwarebytes for in depth scans every month or so

For Windows 7

Microsoft Security Essentials (equivalent of Windows Defender in Windows 8) for your every scan Antivirus and Malwarebyes for in depth scans every month or so

TL;DR VERSION

Windows 8/8.1

Built-in protection + Malwarebytes

Windows 7

Microsoft Security Essentials + Malwarebytes

Malwarebytes or BitDefender have been proven to be the best out there however it's best to not download dodgy or untrusted software. You could get away with only using MSE but I use MSE and Malwarebytes Free to make sure every now and then.
