Hello,

I understand a NAS to be a central storage within for example, your home but im just hazy on the subject as to whether or not it will be like an online cloud service.

Attatched to the NAS I hope to make I will have:

- My Desktop

- My Laptop

- My Chromebook/netbook (Soon to buy)

- My Phone

- The NAS itself from old parts

So basically what im asking is If I am out and about at university can I download/access those files on my NAS, importantly, like any other cloud service available?

The NAS will be connected to my university network and for 99.9% of the time the wifi my netbook/chromebook receive will be from my Uni.

Yes, you can access it remotely.

It simply a computer that you store files on.

There is no reason you couldnt mount an Amazon S3 bucket locally and use that. It would make more sense if you move around a lot.

I will depend on your University, most university networks are quite closed off, you will probably not be able to get it to work.

There are multiple ways around any restrictions like that.

Almost all of them are against the Uni's ToU.

Connect the NAS to a remote server over a VPN and use iptables to route required traffic to the NAS. I have done something similar with a webserver that was hosted inside my university. It worked really well for the 3 years I was there.

This will be 99% of the times against the ToU you had to sign to be able to use their network.

It's not because you can that you should.
