How does this compare to the new yet to be tested R9 285 $249?

The 280X > 285

 

280X has larger bus more VRAM, double the shaders, and more TMUs

 

The 285 has faster memory and lower TDP. HOWEVER, you also get support for all the new tech thats found on the 290X like freesync support, true audio, etc etc

Well worth the extra $40.  I think 280X might have faster memory also 5.5Gbps vs 6Gbps, more power=more heat.

"more power more heat" doesn't really matter, any non-reference 280x will stay perfectly cool under any circumstances 99% of the time, so it's fine
