Hi,

I would like a cheap NAS build with a WD Red 2TB drive and a cheap ass intel CPU and motherboard. I'm not the best with cheap builds, so I've only come up with this: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/vvcwmG

It's kind of expensive, so I need a way to reduce the price of it.

Hey,

@emachado99 's build looks optimal for me. What is your budget limit? Maybe look for a cheaper case and PSU? I wouldn't downgrade the HDD since, as I saw from your last thread, for home usage the importance falls of the drives.

Downgrade to 4GB of RAM?

EDIT: This is the cheapest I could try and get it for you... http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/dXGQK8

But I thought that for ZFS file systems you needed 8GB RAM and a second hard drive for the OS. That's what I heard.

Hello again :).

For ZFS the minimum is 4GB which is considered enough for regular use. It is known to be quite memory hungry because it uses its RAM as a buffer to perform different operations such as reordering all Input/output to be sequential and for checksums. In theory, for maximum performance, you should have enough memory to hold your maximum write speed for about 5 seconds (which for 4GB, having in mind that it has other RAM requirements, is 400MB/s x 5 = 2GB where the speed depends on the type and number of drives and type of RAID you are using). So you can easily figure out how much RAM should be sufficient for you just by checking what drives and how many are you using. Another commonly used rule is that you need 1GB of RAM for every 1TB of storage but I wouldn't stick to that.

In both cases, for one WD Red 2TB drive I would say 4GB of RAM should be enough and 2GB would be the minimum for you.
